Odd thing, the gearshift mechanism has nibbled a small hole in my leather gear stick gaiter, the leather seems to fold inwards and get caught when engaging reverse.

I've sussed out a replacement from the trimmers next door to the factory (£25) but...... how do you remove the centre leather padded console? and.... how do you get the gear knob off!!

cheers,

simon

I've removed the pad that covers the tunnel, from the rear bulkhead to the dash, on an American M400. It wasn't easy. There are four threaded studs, one in each corner of the pad, that protrude into the tunnel. Nuts inside the tunnel hold down the pad. I removed the two tunnel vents under the car, then reached up with a socket on a long extension to remove the nuts. Once you remove the nuts, you can carefully pry up the pad - there are a few (3 or 4?) press-in fasteners that need to be carefully pried out of the top of the tunnel, and you need to remove the gaiter that surrounds the e-brake handle.

Reassembly is the opposite of disassembly, but getting the nuts back onto the studs is a serious pain in the rear...

Hope this helps,
Jim

my gear knob seems to have come a bit loose and is turning a bit on gear changes

if i unscrew it it just twists the gaiter round

is there a way to free the gaiter so i can tighten the knob ?

The gaiter is attached to the stick by a nut that is on the screw thread that compresses down onto the knob. To stop things turning you need to take the pad off and lift it and the gaiter up so you can tighten the nut underneath.
