I'm posting this mainly for the interest of others, and not to attempt to detract in any way from the sadness of Paul Smith's passing.

http://groups.google.com/group/uk.rec.cycling/brow...

I just find it a bit shameful how hateful some people can be. Bear that thread in mind should this particular idiot ever decide to return here.

That is disgusting. Whilst Paul's stance did get peoples backs up in certain circles, to describe him as "despicable" and then to publish his address for the purpose of unwanted mail is inexcusable IMO.

Absolutely disgusting!! furious

Is there any way of complaining to Google about the content of this group? As they seem to be breaking a number of the rules:

ie no one can:

- defame, abuse, harass, stalk, threaten or otherwise violate the legal rights (such as rights of privacy and publicity) of others;
- post any inappropriate, defamatory, infringing, obscene, or unlawful Content;

Sorry but this has got my goat!!

Unfortunately there are a lot of sad people around, it doesn't matter if you agreed with what he said or was campaigning for, if you didn't like him then shut the up. I was always taught that if you can't say something nice about someone then don't say anything at all.

If you are a normal person then you'll have sympathy for his family. I won't loose sleep over someone who I didn't know, however I agree with what he was trying to do and his family have my sympathies.

RIP Paul

It's what you might expect from those people.

TBH though, if Mary Williams had just passed away, one could imagine similar comments being posted on PH (I hope no one on PH takes offense at that suggestion either, but I can just picture it now, the swear filter working on overtime, and threads of rejoicement being locked all over the place).

Said in the private lounge of the safespeed site that on these boards we do not get the advantage of body language - but that what is typed perhaps reveals more of the person within.

One tries to convey an essence of what it would be like to chat face to face in a real pub though. wink

Paul always came across as decent and sincere - and fairly easy going. The idiot in question? We think some severe personality disorder. He cannot have time to ride a bicycle nor even work for a living given the length of time, posting counts on any board it turns up on - including this one as he does read it.

But basically all the character in question tells me is that he does not ride a bicycle (or if he does - it is with scant regard for the law and safety and very greatly infused with a "blame culture" along with one huge chip on his shoulder as well). I cannot call riding a bicycle to the dole office and back or to University or school even "sufficient training to ride up the Tourmalet" as he once claimed.

I am typing this comment because if you click on any of his profiles (and his style is distinctive - more so than my wife's rather "under your skin" typing problems rolleyeswhistle ) - he appears on umpteen fora pasting up the same old .. same old and done to death gripes almost 24/7 without a break. Any chap with any job could not give this time so freely without a boss getting angry about it. Cycling to work makes one "productive on certain cycling chatrooms .. it seems scratchchin"

The only exception was Paul - but then running his campaign was his job anyway.

Funny how he was typing drivel somewhere at the same time as he was claiming to ride there too. whistle

I think some severe personality defect - almost "autistic" in a sense - since he has no regard for any other person's point of view or sense of "tact" - since this character gets violently aggressive - continually harping the same thing over and over ... usually calling everyone else "liars" - but not actually arguing his point - on posts if anyone dares disagrees with him. He seemed to have some kind of vendetta against the late Paul Smith in particular - partly because he could only argue back with what the "Monbigot said in the Grauniad" - and this hate spewed on some relatives of ours when they tackled his nonsense - leading to all manners of rather bizarre accusations on his part - none of which having any substance or truth in them any more than his constant slurs on the late Mr Paul Smith.

Basically - idiot proves what he is - pointless and nasty with it - and I think Petrol Ted's comment when he banned him the last time should be set in stone. Pure class. bow And so true bow

Nah.. I think if it were Dick..

Mary just sings from a hymn sheet. She may support cams - but she did not make the policy. That was down to Dick. whistle

Thats Usenet fo you. It makes the worst PH'r look like a paragon of virtue and shows the positive effect of having moderators. uk.rec.cycling used to have some rabid anti car nutters as regular posters. Its sad because Paul Smith used to provide some very good rational arguments in uk.transport a few years back.

I was thinking the same thing. Hate seems to be quite prevalent on PistonHeads. A lot of the time it seems to be light-hearted, but sometimes I'm not so sure.

They ride bikes in London. Kengestion charge seems to have made a real difference there. rolleyes as regards safety rolleyes

Many of them are "academics" which means they are still in that student ivory tower which is devoid from the real world. Most of us progress up the career ladders and grow up. We come to find that "the text book does not reflect reality" whistle

Although in principle the sentiments might be there, it would still be downright disrepectful at such a sad time for said persons family. And I as a mod would not accept such 'joyus' sentiment to be expressed as such on PH.

Should the persons family be villified and cursed for an individuals opinion? I don't think so.

It's why they won't post on CW or bikeradar as the mags amde it plain they do not wish to be involved in vendetta hate campaign nonsense. At least their other playground keeps it "private". But even then - many fell out with Sam because his site is another "disagree with me and yer bahhhrrrredddd!" type whistle

Absolutely - something distinctly and sickeningly lacking on that Google thread.

Spindrift is clearly mentally ill (or has OCD at best). He has been banging on about stuff Paul posted donkey's years ago (and which has never been part of SafeSpeed's campaign) for years. Some of the others, however, are clearly just not very nice people. They do the cycling community very little credit IMHO...
