Hi I've just bought a laptop and am in the process of pruning vista down. I have zonealarm on my pc and want to install it in place of the inadequate windows firewall but I've heard horror stories of vista with zonealarm. What should I do ion your opinion, have they fixed the bugs yet and has anyone else had problems?

I run vista and zonealarm.

Earlier version of Zonealarm say an XP version will try to install and then fail, I had to do a re-install on mine, then I got the correct version (whoops) and it was fine for few months, then it stopped updating the virus defintions and had to do a total un-install and re-install of Zonealarm but since then it's been all good.

The support from Zonealarm was excellent and it does seem more stable now than it was originally just make sure you install Vista Specific Zonealarm as that was a pain!!

I put it on my machine, but seemed quite bloated from how I remember it a few years ago. It also stopped my torrent program.

The Vista firewall isn't that bad.

Not being a total computer wizard (I normally do structural design especially floors hehe)I had the impression that the vista firewall was no better than the xp one ie doesn't block programs phoning home. If the vista one worked I'd definately want to use it but I've heard many a negative comment about it.

I remember reading that the Vista one blocks outgoing comms, unlike earlier versions.

Having just installed a new Vista PC for my folks, that I will inevitably have to support, does anyone know if the Vista firewall is really a worry?

I uninstalled the McAphee trial and reset the standard firewall, plus AVG. Did I goof up?
