I read or heard that this is possible plugging a hacked iPod into a DSLR and downloading pictures to it.

Is it possible?

This functionality is built into many iPods from recent years. I don't believe any hacking is required. You just need the "Apple iPod Camera Adapter" (Search for it on their store page, I cant leave a link to it)

This is what the store page says about it:

"The iPod Camera Connector provides a fast, easy way to transfer images from your digital camera to your iPod with color display or iPod with video. To use with iPod with color display requires iPod photo software v1.1 or later."

A friend of mine has one of these adaptors and uses it with his DSLR & iPod photo. He said it worked well, apart from not being able to import images in RAW format. This was a while ago though, so im not sure if this is still an issue or not.

The iPod with the camera accessory as mentioned enables the iPod to be a USB host and copy the files across via the camera's USB cable. This of course means that the camera is unusable during the transfer.

The option I initially used before iPods had this functionality built in was to use a Belkin card reader. This way, I could swap memory cards in the camera and copy them onto the iPod whilst continuing to shoot on a second card. However, this didn't prove too successful. I found on occasion that not all files would be copied from the card and that the iPods battery would be drained after 2 1GB cards. Not ideal.

Something like the Epson P3000/P5000 look like good, if pricey, alternatives. However, with CF cards at the prices they are, if viewing the photographs isn't important (and I don't think the iPod can view RAW images, just jpeg) a pocketful of cards is probably the cheapest option.
