I'm using my macbook to try and download torrents which has worked from time to time but when it does work it slows my browsing and that of any other computers on the network. The browsing is slowed even if the download is not near the limit of the connection. I'm using transmission to download. Connected through a linksys wireless-g router to virgin broadband 10mbit.
I have opened the ports on the router for those used by the dl program.
Any help would be appreciated.

Upload is key here, you still upload data when your browsing the web as it is doing jobs such as acknowledging the receipt of data being downloaded.

You should be able to set an upload limit as well as a download limit.

Set this so you have enough free upload capacity to not affect casual browsing.

try using the QoS settings - if they are on your router. Set Torrents to low priority and you should not notice any difference when browsing.

there are also replacement firmware for linksys (Tomato and DD-WRT) that support QoS
