Has anybody had problems with the plastic cylinder head inlet manifold mal-functioning? My Audi A8 is only 4 years old - a piece of this mechanism has broken off and entered the engine.

The result? Audi say I need a complete rebuild of the cylinder head which has been costed at £12,000! However, they actually recommended an entirely new engine at a cost of £20,000+.

Audi accept no responsibility saying the vehicle has done 80,000 miles and falls outside the warranty. Yet this same vehicle needed a new gear box at 30,000 miles (which was carried out under warranty).

Has anyone else experienced, or hear of, a similar problem? How did Audi respond? Any advice would be most welcome.

If its out of warranty I think the first thing I would do is take it to a independent like fontain and see what they have to say. Audi are rubbish to deal with after your car is 2 years old mind had a warrenty and it was still a nightmare. £20000.00 for a new engine eek

Yep, i'd second taking it elsewhere. Plenty of places who can work on these engines. QST and Dialynx are two that spring to mind.

Hmm, when they swappwed your gearbox did they do it in situ or take it out with the engine?

If the latter, was the inlet manifold caught on something when it was removed or possibly the lifting strap got tangled around it.

Fear not regardless, it wont be costing you £12,000 or anything like that ridiculous 'think of a figure and double it' to get your car tip top oncemore.

I'd third the independant's route.

As for Audi's response - the car came with a limited warranty, which I assume you declined extend, the warranty period has been expired for at least 12-months (unless the mileage was reached before three-years). You will need to explain more why you feel a warranty repair done some 50,000 miles previously has any bearing with your current position. It is more than reasonable to assume that any damage that may have been caused during this repair would have presented itself well before now.

The above may seem a touch harsh but you need to take an overview to the situation. Any contribution from Audi would be a goodwill gesture for they are not (given your brief post) liable for a vehicle out of warranty.

If its a bit plastic it can't do that much damage surely? I'd suggest it might be stuck in a valve port, worst case bent a valve? Find someone with an endoscope to find out which port its in you might be lucky & only need a tug to remove it. In which case its a few hours work at most, certainly worth a try far better than a rebuild!

A compression test would reveal the port its stuck in wink

Thanks for all your contributions - most helpful.

I mentioned the gear box issue, not because I thought it was related to the current problem, but to indicate that perhaps I have a rogue A8. A new gear box at 30,000 miles and a new engine at 80,000 miles cannot be considered normal! Or am I just unlucky?

What I'm really trying to find out is this. Audi state that this phenomenon has never occurred anywhere before in all of their history of Audi A8s, where the inlet manifold flap linkage has broken and entered the engine, yet, in the rebuild cost, they are insisting that I replace the undamaged nearside inlet manifold flap linkage also, otherwise they won't warranty any of the repair. Now that is just not logical to me unless there is a recognised problem with that part.

So I was trying to find out if anyone else has experienced this same problem with an Audi A8.

Thanks.
