The ABD have received media enquiries over a DfT proposal, framed like this:

'Because of the cost of new speed limit signs under the 2006 review, the Government want to reduce the NSL to 50mph so the black and white signs will do the job every where.'

Coverage is apparently planned for Monday. Just a request for any additional info PHers may have.

Excellent, it will be a lot easier to overtake now as the 55mph everywhere drivers will be reduced to 45mph...

The reason given in the enquiries is a bit weird though...cost of signage? Still with this daft bunch you wouldn't put it past them. They're screwing businesses over CGT for a few hundred mil that won't last long in the benefits queue.

They'll be losing my taxes if they do, as I will emigrate if this does happen

It sure was / will be news to us. Maybe a couple of journos have been at the Xmas sherry...but if it is a serious proposal, I can't see the signage excuse remaining for long, surely they'll think of a better ludicrous excuse such as emissions reductions.

To be honest given this Governemnt's desire to throttle the life out of the motorist and squeeze as much money oput of us as it can I'm surprised it hasn't been lowered already. The excuse of emissions and poxy Climate Changed will be used to justify it.

If it does happen then be very afraid, because the motorway speed limit will be next, and believe me, it ain't gonna go up...

Fantastic idea.

Everyone will be banned under totting-up in a matter of months, the economy will collapse and the revolution will begin.

Time to form the PH Motorist's party as none of the current lot (Lab/Con/Lib Dem etc) are up to the job.

Are they ing kidding? Have they seen the price of petrol recently? And the percentage of that is tax? Or maybe they've had a look at how much road tax on a vehicle has gone up recently?

What a bunch of ing s. 50 limits are pretty much daft all the time. I can't remember when I last saw a 50 and thought it should be that, and not NSL.

The 'average driver' already thinks the NSL is 50mph, so don't think we will notice any difference while following other traffic.

The only difference will be an increased risk in being caught at 10% +2 over the proposed new NSL.

Surely this is just to increase Gordon the gofer's tax revenue.furious
