Just cross-posting as it seems to cover both forums.

I'm selling mine!

It's one of these.

Seriously.

However if he ever wants to edit the film tell him to forget about DVD cameras (hence me selling).

What's the issue with editing then?

Read the reviews at the bottom of the amazon link. It'll give you the idea. I believe the issue is common to all DVD cameras. It's all to do with MPEG 2.

Currys currently have a hiDef Sony HDV (tape) camcorder for a bargain £440, £411 in costco for the same thing.

Tape is better for editting and for in car use, DVD isn't great for either.

Unless you have a specific requirement, I wouldn't bother buying a camcorder. You'll never watch the footage and editing it down to a workable length that isn't going to bore your mates rigid is an enormous task (my video producer mate reckons it takes an hour of effort to produce one minute of finished video). The recordings and the camera will lie in a drawer, gathering dust until the march of technology destroys their second-hand value and you end up donating them to the local charity shop.

They have a 1 year old daughter and want to film her doing funny stuff etc.

For the record I agree with you but they're new parents and it's one of those urges that my brother wants to satisfy.

I'd rather be the uncle that helps them out rather than the uncle that grumbles "waste of time"... smile

Thats why we bought a camcorder and to be honest the DVD one does what it says on the tin. Battery last ages. Instant playback via a standard DVD player and you can rip it as many times as you like.

On that basis he's probably aiming at the right technology.

Until recently I would have said that is true. Have loads of stuff from holidays that we never ever watch.

But videos of kids is a different thing.

Got to say that I looked at a camcorder when our boy was born - didn't want to justify the expense then (and still haven't) - I have used the video clip function on my mobile serves the purpose of sending short video clips to the relatives in the USA.

I can't think of any other use that I'd put a camcorder to...

Hard disk camcorder are no good for incar footage as the bumps in the car will affect the camcorder and stop the recording. Something i found out last year. n my roadtrip in Europe.

IMO tape and memory stick/SD cards are the way to go

I have been a regular Camcorder user for quite a few years and had a Panasonic DV which I used to edit via a video recorder. Early last year I upgraded to a JVC HD 30Gb and started what I would call the most frustrating editing nightmare ever. I first used the software that came with the camera which is pinnicle, this was very simple but also tempremental and sometimes would not burn to CD giving new excuses everytime. I then bought Ulead, which wouldn't even capture from the camera,so I did some research and ended up buying Sony Vegas 6 software. This is very complicated but after a while and some help from a friend I think we have finally got it.
Basically I have been very close to giving up on many occasions but persevere because of the end results.

Also I use a Hague car mount for in car filming and it works a treat with an HD camera.
