Now we have 4 really silly cars we need to rethink how we look after them, so...

Basic Car Maintenance Tuesdays, 7pm to 9pm, starts on the 7th Jan - £4 per evening
Intermediate Car Maintenance Thursdays, 7pm to 9pm, starts on the 10th Jan - £4 per evening
Next step Car Maintenance 7pm to 9pm, starts on the 7th April - £4 per evening

At West Notts College, Acorn Way, Oak Tree Lane, Mansfield. Call Trevor Burton on 01623 631547 for details.

Unfortunately the Basic course is on a Tuesday so would clash with the MatStarkAmberKelhamThorpe meets but for £4 an evening it may be worth it. scratchchin

Now I was going to call this bloke to see what 'basic' and 'intermediate' meant and take it from there.

Just thought I would post to see if anyone else is interested.

One of the tutors at WNC is a very good friend of mine .. so if you decide to go let me know who's tutoring you and if it's my friend I'll give you plenty of gossip with which to blackmail him wink

Would be interested to hear the findings, it's only up the road from me, unfortunatly most of the things that seem to go wrong with my motors require special tools/skills to fix but a bit more knowledge is always a good thing. smile

Ok - just talked to the chap about the course. The basic course is just that: basic hehe Starts right at the beginning with checking tyres, fluids etc with the intent that you can do a basic service by the end. This starts tomorrow (Tuesday). The next course up is the Intermediate, which covers diagnostics and fault finding (why won't the car start etc) - this starts on Thursdays.

For both courses you just turn up on the day - no need to pre-register. They need at least 8 people for the course to run.

I think we'll go along on Tuesday if only to get a better idea of what the course will cover and whether the intermediate would be a better bet.

Thanks for the notification.

I rang the bloke the other day after seeing this, as I don't know my engine from my elbow. He said it was sparse at the mo, although didn't mention the 8 student minimum.

Anyway, FWIW I may pop along also.

Most evening courses require ten people as a minimum to run. It isn't economically viable otherwise.

I wasn't sure whether these things operate on an economic viability or value to the community basis. I suppose as the latter is difficult to quantify...

I only saw it first when Ace-T posted it, and would have thought they might target adverts for specific courses to interested communities themselves.

Sadly colleges now operate very much as a business as funding is very much dependent on bums on seats and course pass rates.

Well that was actually quite interesting! The basic course consists of 10 weeks at £40 for the whole course. The course schedule is as follows:

Overview
Servicing
Brakes
Wheels
Tyres
Jacking and Drainage

Now it is not all dry classroom pointing at bits of car stuff, we are talking stripping down your brakes and refitting them, proper servicing of your car, tuning and fixing. We as a group can ask the tutors to cover what we want. We can also work on our own cars and the parts are apparently pretty darn cheap too. There are about 17 odd cars to practice on in there including a Jag and a Beemer along with less exotic machinery. Full MOT equipment is available including a rolling road! bounce

To say I was surprised is an understatement. Nice clean premises that don't look like a college too. 9 including us so far and from what I can tell a mix of backgrounds. I did ask Lurker not to mention the cars we have, we used the Mini and the Alfa for our 'what car do you have' question thing so if anyone else joins us I would rather they were not mentioned until we were comfortable with it.

The funniest moment was when Lurker scribbled on his notepad Ace & Judas? and held it up for us to see across the classroom hehe

I mentioned that others may wish to join us and they said if you were wanting to then you would need to get there a bit earlier than 7pm next Tuesday to register. C'mon you lot and play car mechanics with us!

May see some of you at car school then, but for now the MatStarkAmberThorpe meetings will not be sullied by our presence. hehe

PS If I have forgotten anything Lurker, please feel free to add/correct etc smile
