I'm considering getting a dedicated server at webfusion and their servers have unlimited bandwidth with a 10meg connection.

"Unmetered bandwidth = no speed restrictions = no more bandwidth bills!

.........connected to the tier one Pipex network via a dedicated 10Mb/s switch port, leaving you free to use as much bandwidth as you need at no additional cost."

The question is...will that 10meg pipe be enough????

I'm currently using 20GB of bandwidth per month and that's with an unfinished website. The site will host Flash videos, downloadable videos and lost of photo galleries (about 5GB of Ferrari pics alone).

So it would be very easy to hit 100GB.

Will 10meg pipe as stated above be enough?

Any good bad experiences with that company? I currently have a fasthosts reseller account and not too keen to get a server from them.

Thanks

Depends on the content, and how many people you expect to service..

If people are downloading, one DSL customer could saturate your server, meaning packet loss / extreme slowdown for everyone else..

iirc they only offered 10mbit PORTS, not 10mbit of available bandwidth... again iirc people were only actually getting 2-3mbit at peak times (ie 200k/s max!) before the server saturated... the bandwidth was highly contended..

The question you need to ask yourself is how much traffic do you actually plan to need? if it's a reasonable amount, just talk to other reputable / preferred providers anyway, see what they can offer..

Obviously If the site isnt important to you / isnt for business, then go for it.. as a cheap dump box then it's fine..

ALSO, confirm 100% with them that this is a physical dedicated server, afaik they were just selling 'virtual' servers as 'dedicated' when infact they're just VPS's (ie many many of them on one physical server) sharing the same resources..

Also, ask if you get full root access.. again iirc they offered this, but removed all support if you opted for this.

they seem to be older than the ark P4 2.8's as well!... these are about 3-4 generations old!

We offer QuadCore Xeon 2.4's (4x2.4Ghz CPU cores) 1GB Ram and 160GB Hdd from £49 a month!
