The cheapest one is only a single quad core processor though.
I don't know why they say 'from £1749', when you can configure one for £1429.
No wonder everyone thinks they're expensive!
I'm waiting for the old model to become cheaper now!
Yes but still a good price, I'm about to order the 8 core but stumped on card option.... these really are shity games cards...I don't know why they say 'from £1749', when you can configure one for £1429.

I'm not saying they're expensive - I'm just saying that other people will think so when your cheapest model is only found when you reconfigure the £1749 one.
I want the 3.2 8 core model, but will probably end up with either the 2.8 8 core, or a refurb 3.0 4 core model to replace my aging 2ghz dual G5.
I'm just hoping the speed increase after 3-4 years will overcome the Rosetta lag for non Intel/Universal apps.

I see your a DTP/Mac operator ! do you work from home or printers?
I moved out the Print side into 3D as the money really has dropped off over the last few years... still keep my hand in tho!
I'm using the macpro to run win 3d soft but concerned about the card..... not moved to leper yet :-) only tested bootcamp via beta, seemed ok

I use the G5 at home and anywhere I can drive to, and use an Intel iMac for anywhere I'm flying/training to.
I'm mainly using the iMac under bootcamp as some of the programs I have to use (i.e. Office) are faster on XP than on Leopard/Tiger.
Some clients offer a machine for me to use, but there's nothing worse than arriving to find you've been given a crappy laptop/pc with no memory, integrated graphics and nothing except Office on it - and they expect you to do their magazine work in InDesign/Quark when the machine doesn't have it installed.

... I've also got two dead G3 ibooks, both with failed logic boards. Why did they fail? The casing is too weak and the logic board flex's, this together with thermocyclling causes the ATI video chip to become detached along some of its solder joints. I could go on...
That thing must be at least 7yrs old! Not exactly a terrible lifespan for a laptop.I've had one of my Powerbooks for a similar period and it works fine.
Yes they have some issues now and then, but then every Wintel based unit I'd had up to that point drove me insane!
I do have to say, however, that I had shed loads of issues with the last flavour of iMac...it's currently sat under the stairs with swollen capacitors on the logic board. Repair cost approaching 800 quid so I won't be bothering.

Interesting, so is that a mix of design and training work? do much retouching/3d work?. What's the currect market like are you kept busy, just interested as spent years in print :-), now 3D graphics.
Don't do training anymore as I tended to find they brought me in to do "Introduction to Quack Werks 7" 6 months after the employees had received the software anyway and were already well beyond the novice level.Only do print stuff, was interested in web & 3d stuff but there was a steep learning curve to that where I would just be one beginner out of many. I do basic retouching stuff in Photoshop, mainly to clean up photos/sketches for using in presentations and brochures.
Currently I'm 80% utilised, which is good, but clients are now asking for 4 day-a-week rates - which coincidentally work out almost the same as 20% more than the 5 day-a-week rates.
I tend to get my work by word of mouth - as clients move from company to company they can't take their internal teams with them, but know I'm on the end of a phone if they need me.
What is frustrating is having a couple of weeks off with no sign of work, only to accept a short-term (i.e. 1-2 weeks) piece of work, then have another client offer a longer piece.
