Hi All

Has anyone fitted Toyo R888 tyres to there Ultima yet. They do our size for the rear 335/30R18 but not a 245/35R18 for the front. If you have fitted them what size did you fit on the front? All the ones they do that would fit the front have a greater radius than a 245/35R18!

Since my last dyno session ate my tyres I am looking for new options. I am doing a couple of trips into Europe this summer but also plan on some trackdays a visit to the dragstrip and Vmax.

Hi Dave

Roll on March / April when the dragstrips are open to R.W.Y.B. (and our Ultima head to head !!). Have you got the TC working yet ?

Also, do you know when the next vmax run is ? I can never find the details on the site, just the results after the event. I don't have the 'box for more than 180 or so but getting there is a great rush. What box / ratios have you got in the yellow missile ? Would be great to see you top 200 and you should do with all that power smile Am more than happy to video you from the passenger seat !

Kyle, how is the engine installation coming along ? Been trying to get over to you but been held back by various factors ...

Hi Tony

I'm busy working on the hardtop at the moment but I will get around to the traction control sometime soon. I have a new gearbox on the way from California Motorsports. It is a G96/50 and 6th will give me 222mph at 6500rpm. As for the next Vmax keep an eye on the Vmax forum in the "gassing station". I'll be waiting for the late spring/summer one before I go along.

Regards Dave

I have been running the R888 for almost a year now - I got the first pair of 335s in the country but struggled with fronts and ended up going down to a 225 on the front. I mainly use it for trackwork and having done 8 trackdays on them they are only about 1/2 worn - and I do tend to give it some. The 225s are probably a bit of a compromise- they are fine in the dry and the car is pretty neutral but in the damp/wet it can get a bit understeery. They are fine on the road 'cos tyre roar isn't an issue in an Ultima anyway. A word of warning though, in the wet you appear to get lots of grip right up to the point you start travelling sideways - they go from grip to aquaplane with next to no warning. Otherwise they are brilliant - I spend a lot of time following GT3 RSs through the corners weaving around behind them as they are busy trying to stay on the blackstuff.

Thanks for the info Mike.

I hope to do a tial fit of a 255/35R18 as it has a smaller radius than the 225/40R18. It could cause issues elsewhere so I just want to trial fit it and see.

My P zeros are done after one track day in the rear, plenty of tread left on the front. After the fronts are done I'm planning to get these, either in the 275 or 295/30 size (11 inch wide front wheels).

The big question is, how do the R888's compare to Kumho V70A's (on track) ?

I use the V70 (V700) for trackdays and it works fantastic. My first test was at the Ring (Nurburg) and I was impressed. And the best thing is that they are very affordable in terms of price.

So would you get another set of R888's? We saw these at the autosport show and I have had them on my exige and the grip is excellent. Would you say they offer better grip in the dry than the competition (I expecting the answer to be yes as they are essentially a road legal track tyre?!)?

Don't expect good grip on the wet from both Toyo or Kumho because they are more close to be a dry slicks than a road legal tire.

Driving a car that weighs circa 1000Kg with tyres over a foot wide each on the driven wheels and a likely torque output of anything upwards of 350ftlbs, only those with a death wish are likely to be pushing an Ultima even remotely hard in the wet, regardless of the tyre choice don't you think?
I have a set of Toyo 888's on my Volvo T5 estate and although it weighs over 50% more than the Ultima with a third of the power and is therefor essentially a totally different animal I know, they are still IMO a mighty fine tyre and I will be looking to put a set on the GTW in the very near future. I have always been aware of the fact that this type of tyre has a propensity to let go rather abruptly rather than progressively but have never yet experienced a problem.

Reply to Can Am Dave - I tried the 255s on the front of mine but they kept catching the arches and the back of the light pods - if you want to try a pair I have a one lap old pair.

Ken- How are you getting clearances for an 11" front wheel with a 275/295 tire? What mods are necessary? I see others here reporting problems with fitting even a 255.

Thx,
TT
