Focus Zetec 1.6 Misfire

Cruising down the motorway not very far at all from home this evening the Mr's Focus 1.6 Zetec 53 plate (which I had borrowed) dropped at least one if not two cylinders ( the engine check light also started to flash) and rather than be stranded at the side of the motorway waiting in the rain for the breakdown truck I nursed the very ill car home. Given the poppping and banging from the car and the heat emenating from the cat I wouldn't say fuelling was an issue so my initial guess is that its ignition related.
As its still raining I will investigate the car tomorrow but to get my diagnostic juices flowing can anyone in the know tell me the most likely causes on ignition failure on the Zetec.
As a matter of course I will be throwing a new set of plugs in the car ( just turned 50k miles on original plugs) but is there anything else that should be prime suspect.

Coil packs have a very high failure rate on this engine(also fitted to the later mondeo)sometimes you can see external cracks,swelling to casing,get a diagnostic scan carried out if in doubtchange the plugs a little more often too,oh yeh HT leads fail often also(not visual)most of the time.
10/10 for keyboard engine fault diagnosis........
Fitted a £42 (generic motor factor) coil pack and it was as good as new.
However, 36 miles later this afternoon it started missing again, firing on two, then three, then a full set of cylinders, then 3 then fine , then 2 then........well you get the idea.
Swapped the new coil pack for an even newer one and the car is back running sweet as a nut.
The engine fault code just said "intermittent misfire" and has now been cleared, so I hope the failed new coil was just one of a bad batch of coil packs from whatever third world factory they are assembled in by untrained 10 year old kids........

Just given the car a full service and replaced the plugs.............or what was left of them!! I've never ever seen gaps that wide and the engine still run.!
No wonder the coil was breaking down given the gap that it was having to bridge.
Answer is don't believe the Ford service schedule, change the plugs once it gets past 30k, dont wait to get into the 40's or 50's.
So heres hoping the misfire is solved, it's certainly running like a peach now.
