Advertising Images
Discussion
Hello there,
I have recently started a publishing company, which involves designing advert for clients.
We use the Adobe software (photoshop/illustrator etc) on a mac and it's going well so far, however...
I'm stuck for images for the adverts, and just wondered if anyone could reccomend somewhere to buy in librarys of images for use in print advertising??
We need cheesy things like handshakes, pens signing contracts, and all the usual tat.
I know there are companies out there selling cd's with thousands of images, which is what we want, but i want to make sure that they can be used (copywrite etc) in the creation of print advertising.
Thanks in advance.

Hi
I have just put Photoshop CS3 on my machine and it includes a link to an image library with images such as these that you can buy and use.
When my company produced it's own website we in fact hired a photogrpaher for a day and did our own, much better as we had the company logo appearing in several places.

I use www.istockphoto.com - very useful and you only pay for what you use.

Yeah we're going to try and build up a bank of our own photos too, but it will take a while to get enough.
Thanks for the links, and the sites had some good photos too. The thing is, rather than buying a few individual images at a time like those sites, we're after more of an image library that we can purchase. Maybe like an image bank of 1000 business related images on a CD?

There must be a place that sells an image library of like 1000+ images including print licence?
Not sure. Normally the way it works is that the licence fee depends on (for example) size of image, where its being used, how many copies are being printed, whether it's for commercial gain etc. So for the Parish newsletter or charity run you might get a freebie, for the front cover of a Harry Potter book, £££. And of course there comes a point when the fee exceeds what it would cost to get someone to take it for you and negotiate your own deal.Yeah very good point. I was just sure you could buy them in a library...
They are used in a free publication, however the clients have paid to feature in it. We design their adverts as 'part of the deal,' so really they are being used in free literature.
I'll just keep having a hunt around and see what i can uncover.
Thanks for the replies though

istock is what my designers use and they can usually find a photo suitable to any scenario cheaply. The only downside is that they are often used by other companies, a recent funny example being a photo of a couple of smartly dressed blokes we used for a commercial finance advert was also spotted by one of our team in the gay dating section of a local paper!
haha, yeah that could be a problem!!
I found a site called stock.xchng where they are free for use in free distribution literature which is what we're doing. We've been using it this afternoon and it all seems OK. The problem with sites like istockphoto is that we will typically need 3/4 images for each advert, and will need them in a large size so the quality is OK, and at £4 - £8 each it will soon add up... and it could end up looking like a Gay Times ad!!!
