Welding is complete.

Hi all,

My chassis is now complete. I will dress it up on Sunday and post photos. it is solid as a rock, all rotten areas cut out and replaced - all areas I didnt like the look of (mottled / thin) either cut out or puddle welded.

Its been a long day, started at 8.30 welding finished 7.30 pm. Im off down the pub to celebrate.

Id be particularly interested to see any intermediate pics of the repair to the large tubes(ie the bit where I think in another thread you refer to inserting a tube into the original), thats if you took any??

Mine is now complete as well and the rear sections are all painted and waxoyled (no welding needed in engine bay area). Pics will be on my website later (www.gbsportscar.com). I didn't go down the shot blast route but took the hard method with the wire brush and drill - seems to have worked ok as I could get to all areas of corrosion (the middle sections were pristine and haven't been touched).

Ther seem to be too many of us doing this this winter!!!!

Sunday I will paint the fuel tank and prepare the garage for tie sealer spray and 2 red top coats.

Wishbone and rear trailing arms next week end.

PS Ken my hands are covered and you are correct it will not come off.

The spacers are just shims we have at work, I can post you some if you need them, Engine mounting info as follows:-

Hi Ken,
I have brought 2 engine mounts from Rally Design total price for both £24.09 including packaging (2 x HEAVY DUTY RUBBER ENGINE MOUNT - 50mm (RD410), I think they will lift the engine enough to clear the ARB that I didnt have (which I have now purchased with SH droplinks), however when I took the engine out there was a washer missing in the inside of the engine mount, so I am not sure what I need at the moment, but will need something.

All my chassis parts are now painted and I will do the other bits - brakes, steering rack, knuckles etc during the week, I am knackered at weekends for a while, work tomorrow and kids Sunday, next weekend we are going away for a valentine weekend break, if I am lucky enough she may let me pack my own bag myself and I can sneak some parts that need stripping or painting !!

Hi all,

Now it looks like this - Por tie sealer leave for 48 hrs.





Friday is top coat day, I have purchased a 2 part paint called current red 1.5 ltr. £41.63

Tank, brakes all bits and bobs painted - apart from shockers they are unassembled and springs shot blasted - I am thinking about using engine enamel to paint them - any thoughts ?.

The engine will be completed next weekend.

Second hand BOB camshafts - 20 more bhp (from a 80000 miles scorpio - £120)
Replaced a couple of hydraulic tappets (£40.04).
Vauxhall vectra injectors gives faster exceleration and better mileage. (£20 fleabay)
New rocker cover gaskets - old ones leaking(£86 - I think they are made from dodo bird skin)
New plenim gaskets (£22)
New crank shaft gasket (£4)
Fortunatly the cam chain guides are good condition - no need for a complete tear down.
Top half has been painted silver - cosworth badges smartened up

I think it will be oil tight and look quite tidy

One of the sparkplug o rings had gone and was full of oil, therefore missing power.

Decatted - It should go like hell.

Vented front discs to slow it down.

It would be interesting match - V8s S3c ?

The problem is the powertrain will be good, its going to make the body and interior look shabby - next winters project lined up then.

Barky keep the work rate up - I have gone past the enjoying it bit and its now turned into the more hours I put in, the faster I complete it the less time I will spend doing it (if that makes sense), sometimes 6 hours in the evening, without reducing quality - Ive done so much work on it - it would be a shame to fall when Im starting to see the home straight.

Its looking great Sean - I am hoping to get my welding done this weekend.
I can't strip any more off the car now - it has 4 wheels and thats it.
It is a bit interesting to move without any steering!
