It's gotten cold and wet in south Texas so I to turn on the heater in my 1995 XJ6 and all I get is A/C. I noticed that the temp gauge is staying on very cold - even when the car is well run. Any idea of the a/c and gauge share a common sender? Thanks Grady

Looks like your thermostat has failed, given the low temp gauge reading

Easy, simple and cheap to fix...for a change

Checked - The car is not overheating and the temp - when toasty - is the same at the top and bottom radiator sides as well was on both sides of the termo housing. That sounds to me like the coolant is circulating. Any other ideas?

Another vote for a bad thermostat.

Start up from cold and put your hand on the top hose or the top of the radiator.

If the temperature gradually increases over a while with the engine idling - 5 or 10 mins should be long enough - rather than staying cold and then suddenly getting pretty hot, then it's likley the thermostat has failed in the open position.

BTW - Changing the thermostat fixed the gauge but not the heater. Good try. Grady

If I remember the X300 has an electric pump to circulate coolant through the heater matrix.

Next step would be find it - I think it's toward the rear of the engine compartment inline one of the hoses - and to check it's running when the engine is and the climate control is calling for heat.

Same problem with mine. Changed thermostat. No problem. A quick and easy fix. Two bolts as I remember.

X300's Did have a pump, and an electronic valve controlling the heater flow, a simple multi-meter test will show you whether these are working or not. Another problem is the matrix core it's becoming clocked with debris from the cooling system, have changed a few of these for that problem. Let us know how you get on.
