How often should this be changed and how is it serviced/removed, Car is a 92 Griff with what appears to be a pretty dirty filter despite full service history.

I'd clean it at least every 6 months personally (I've just had to do it on my 500 which had a full reputable dealer history, and I had clumps of dirt falling off it/embeded in it). I can post how to do it here if you've got the 'slab' filter, but I think these were used on later cars (post 95 ish). Let me know if you want the info

Cheers

Is it dirt or is it the sticky black gunk deliberately applied to help stop the bits going through?

My advise is dump the soggy oil soaked sponge and get a nice new K&N filter from that wonderful Tim chap at ACT. It is an easy job, works very well and makes the car feel like it is breathing easier.

There is a short write up of this at:

www.tvrcc-surrey.co.uk

select Other on the menu and you should see a short write-up on the K&N.

Thanks for all the replies. Now I Know it should be oily and horrible I would like to know how to give it a clean becuse I am sure it needs it.(It is the cylindrical unit and not the slab).
I like the sound of the K+N filter - How much are they?

They are great but I didn't know they worked under water, in a submarine no less. Or maybe the predictive text is meant pub?
