Have just got the car back from it's 3rd service. Whilst it was there I mentioned that the cd players screen is blank. Everything works fine, just no display. Sl****s in Colwyn Bay have quoted me £1660.86 +VAT for a replacement unit. I also said that the cooling fans come on after 15mins of start & stay on. Again, Sl****s said it was a faulty thermostat & quoted me £182.71 +VAT for a replacement.
Now, is it me...have I been away from it all for too long?, or has anyone else had the same problem?

Sounds like its time for an aftermarket stereo/cd unit.

I replaced the complete system, with Infinity component spkrs, Elemental Designs subs and Infinity amp, Blaupunkt HU and added a 250Gb MP3 system for about 12-1300 all up.
1660!! yikes Tell 'em they're havin' a laugh, go see an ICE specialist and get a proper install for probably less.

I've still got my Original HU floating about somewhere Paul if you're just after a short-term solution.

I *think* I still have the code!

Thanks for the help guys - Steven, I've got your email thanks...I DID ask to the garage as to why they were pricing themselves out of the spares market - toward £200 for a thermostat too - it's as though they didn't want the work!!!

Devil/Paul - are you at work this week? If so, I'll call in & see you!

Thanks again guys, much appreciated!

I should be about, but I might have to 'slope' off to do a few errands such as breaking dentists skulls!

I'll pm you later (still @ work).

One thing, have you tried to remove the radio then push it back in? Might be a loose connection on the back to the block connector. I found Good Motoring in Mochdre very helpful with regards to the stereo/alarm system for the Monaro. You could always give them a ring to see if they can help.

Gotta love the spare parts situation for these cars! £1600+ for a stereo that has no RDS, Mp3 etc is a joke. I think you can pick these stereos up for very small amounts albeit on Oz ebay. Perhaps cost might be due to Vauxhall having to buy the parts bulk from Holden and then store them for months even years before even selling them. Therefore just covering costs? Just a thought, not defending them.

Perhaps Caspy is now in a postition to give us an unbiased opinion on that?

Hi Paul - I'd have thought that Sl****s would have done the disconnect-reconnect thing as a matter of course, to come up with the 'you-need-a-replacement-unit' statement.
Probably tomorrow when I call in...text me a good time...& I'll get phone numbers off you!

Thanks again Paul.

I'd take the stereo replacement thing with caution. They probably just looked at it from outside the car with the doors locked on a dark, cloudy day!

Trust me, I know from previous experience with another Corsa that they (the dealership we both deal with) can sometimes be dis-interested, even dismissive, and fob you off to the point that I had to be a real pain in the a**e over the period of a couple of months to get them to look properly and not be so patronising!

In the end, the car concerned was eventually inspected by a guy from VX Luton and they were told to replace the ignition wiring loom as it was a known fault! Looked hard didn't they?!

last I checked a 160 degree thermostat for a gto was around 25 dollars or something in the states... yep here you go

www.afterthoughtsauto.com/gto-c5-thermostat.html course you may need a few other changes as it runs a bit cooler than the stock item.

.. you need to set the fans to come on earlier. You can get it to hold 80*C no problems which is good for preventing knock and a denser charge.
Stock is 98*C from memory.

well fans - thanks for that...I'll get one from there then, at that price!

ringram - fans to come on sooner (80 instead of 160)....is this after I've done the new stat? Don't want 'em coming on any sooner at the mo...they're coming on even before the engine is at operating temp, & staying on! How cool do I want the engine!!! We need heaters over here at this time of year.

Thanks for your help guys, appreciate it.

160 is fahrenheit, 80 is celcius
Basically the 160*F thermostat is full open at 71*C you can use the fans to keep it at 80*C around 176*F

You can see what your engine temp is by reading the ECT sensor from the engine management port. The fans should only come on when the temperature hits the on temperature. If its coming on and staying on, then as was mentioned before it may be faulty. The LS2 fans are variable and speed increases with temperature so its managed more progressively than the older LS1 ECU's.

Depending on your mods and plans I would put a 160* one in especially with forced induction as it will help keep charge temps down and reduce heat in general. But it does have the side effect of making the engine tighter and perhaps wear a little more, plus emissions might increase.. That said Lingenfelter and most of the performance shops recommend them in performance setups.

On the fans subject, I had this in the summer and it turned out to be a faulty relay in the engine compartment, the high speed fan relay I think. Mine also stayed on after I turned the car off. Changed the relay and never had a problem since. Worth a look maybe.
