My Z4M's mileage went backwards
Discussion
I parked the car on Friday at a valet parking at one of the major airports. Being the paranoid sort, I took a photo of the mileage before I handed the keys over.
Picked it up today and the mileage was one mile lower.
Er, anyone know easy it is to reprogram the mileage on a 2006 Z4M ? the service guy at my local dealer swears it's very difficult, even with main dealer kit.. certainly out of the range of "Man with laptop" I'd hope
I did have a headlight replaced last week, I seem to remember something about the mileage being stored in other places than just the instrument panel.. weird huh?

Its not that difficult form what I have been told.... I have been told that someone has claimed to have done it on an E60 M5 quite easily.
Also as far as I am aware with modern digital speedos the driving in reverse does not reduce the figure on the mileage clock... not difficult to find out though. Just go outside and drive around in reverse for a bit and see if the mileage goes down.

Not sure about BM's but some EEprom chips have a limited rewrite capacity so the dash instruments/BCU store the mileage using the battery supply and rewrite on ignition off/pulse limit etc. If they disconnected the battery then it can lose a mile or so (back to the last save point).
Resetting the mileage won't reset the trip, that's done in a different part of the program.

Sounds like an ideal situation! Why complain?
Just park it up for 10.96 years to wipe 1000 miles of the clock, think about lower depreciation you'll face! Erm, actually...
I wouldn't be worried personally, the idiots you have to be worried about in those places probably don't know their arse from their elbow let alone how to rewind the clock on a Z4M.

Any chance you've mixed the 2 photos up?
Not from the file numbering.it may not download them in the order that they're taken so that may explain it....
did you note down the mileage elsewhere?
Top photo (higher mileage) taken on the 18th Jan
Bottom photo taken on the 21st.
Type "BMW Mileage Adjustment" into Google and see what comes up...
The Back of Autotrader is usually full of ads for this sort of "service" too.
I wonder if it's some sort of rounding issue in BMWs software.
i.e. the mileage when parked is 14849.7 which could be rounded to 14850 for display, but when the ignition is turned off the mileage is stored as an integer value and the 0.7 is lost for good
Drive it until the last digit has just rolled over, stop, turn it off and see if it does the same thing again
