Just a quick question to the PH BiB....
Driving home tonight on a dual carriage way that merged into single lane I was in the outside lane passing traffic on the inside which were all queueing. I got near to the front but not quite the front when a silver Hilux pulled out in front of causing me to brake strongly but not hard enough to lock up. I beeped him to show my displeasure after which he put his pick up into reverse and moved back at me. I didnt move and he pretty much did it just to scare me.
So is it worth reporting or just forget about this one?

Mr Killer. Was this up Shaw Cross by any chance? I do that all the time there. I wouldn't bother reporting it, he was just annoyed at you.
Just last week up there I wanted to get in front of a pickup because he had some unsecured planks in the back. He drove in the middle of the carriageway for the last 500yds....

Yes. If the police/cone operators wanted you to merge further back, they'd have put the cones there. By merging (or forcing others to merge) further back, you are effectively extending the length of the blocked lane and slowing everyone down.
If everyone simply queued in all lanes up to the merge, traffic would be overall quicker, and noone would be 'cheated'. Feckin' idiots some people.

No it wouldn't, the queue would just be shorter and fatter. To make it go quickly, those in the RHD should merge whereever there is the best gap to do so.If both lanes were full all the way to the end then the traffic at the pinch point wouldn't be able to flow through as the left lane would be stopping and starting to let people in.
Drivers in the LHD should leave gaps, and those in the RHD should use them. Instead of the usual situation where those on the left bunch up to stop people getting in, while those in the right ignore what gaps there are and drive right down to the end because thats faster for them - and not for the traffic as a whole.

You will then be subject of counter allegations by the driver of the pick up and he will probably give a statement.
You must be prepared to attend a court at a later date to have the matter tested and judged by magistrates.
You will be called a liar, ably assisted and egged on by expensive people called lawyers.
You may also be subject to a information within a summons laid against you.

I would say its a fair question to ask. One might imagine that if many independant people reported similar behaviour from the same car the Police may choose to have a quiet word with the owner. "Zip merging" works und ist even encouraged abroad. In fact, we are now seeing signs in sensible North here to "zip merge" or "blend into lane". We have no problem. Queue shorter .. road users pulling together to reduce the congestion und showing consideration to each other
It much more civilised .. By the way gone Liebchen.. what if the pick-up had actually reversed into this car. There nothing to say OP was "illegal" as he merging into the lane after making better use of road space.
Und even if he had ignored some cones.. deliberately reversing into someone ist an act of road rage which could have caused personal injury to tune of SI .., It a

We now have "merge in turn" in our Highway Code. Idiots like the guy you came across haven't read the Highway Code in years and wouldn't know - hence they get shirty when people actually follow the rules!
I probably wouldn't report it - without evidence. But I DO believe we all should report dangerous driving when we see it. We shouldn't tolerate deliberately putting others in danger on the road. I fail to see what the Traffic Cops can do about it, though, if there's no evidence. Bloody hard finding witnesses... Like I say - I'm thinking of a video system. To be honest its rare I see piss poor driving to the point it should be reported but when I do it makes me livid and I'd like to be able to do something about it...

I get this behaviour regularly on the A582 going into Preston in the morning.
In fact one day last week I though I was going to have to wade in to help someone after a "you're not passing me" road rager got out of his car to threaten another driver.
That particular pillock had done like the Hilux in the OP - blocked an empty lane 2 to stop people using the mile or so of dual carriageway up to the merge point. He swerved hard right to block/ram me from passing and as he did so the car behind me went past to his left, (IE between road rager and the queueing cars in lane 1). Road rager took off after this guy like a nutter trying to overtake him (on the chevrons, wrong side of solid lines etc. When I caught up with them at the next roundabout road rager (a scrawny little rat man, you know the type) was out of his car giving it verbals.
Yet it was HIM who'd been driving like a dick?!?!

There is very little one can do about this style of driving , just be defensive . One day they will meet a mirror image of themselves and then it gets serious . Stay cool , I think this style of driving is going to get a lot more an everyday happening before it is brought under control.
In Germany agression behind the wheel can land you in real serious trouble , with even a pysco test before they let you drive again !

I dunno about that, i had a visit from a PCSO after accidentally pulling out on someone once, was reported anonymously they said and wanted to let me know.. weird i thought

That's more or less it in a nutshell. I would say that you could also be done for road rage having sounded the horn at him. The Highway Code says to use the horn as a warning not a rebuke.
