I have always wanted a classic mini cooper for as long as I can remember, not much chance of finding one here in Dubai though I thought

A local garage has got one for sale, but I need some advice, they seem to no bugger all about it

They tell me its a not an Original cooper, its a Paddy Hopkirk limited edition from the 70's, does this ring true. If so what else should I be looking out for

I've not heard of a Paddy Hopkirk limited edition from the 70's and I don't think BLMC did one.
What you need is one of the specialist books to enable you to understand what is and what is not a Cooper or a Cooper 'S'. Of course, you can replicate a Cooper and so long as you are not an originality freak, just someone who enjoys Minis for what they are, then that's fine. Just take care that yo8u don't pay the price for a genuine original and end up with a badly-built replica. There is plenty of free advice on here if you post photos of the car (inc engine and interior) plus details of engine number and any other features.
Post what you think the car is and we'll all tell you specifically what to check for.
