Quick contracting questions
Discussion
I want to get back into contracting. Just wanted some advice from the collective.
I've worked one previous contract, which was initially for six months. The contract was terminated early (client abandoned project).
1. How often does this happen? I'd hate to start somewhere then get booted out after a month (we'll assume that I don't get booted because I'm no good!)
I'm not having much luck finding an agency that will put me forward as I have 4 weeks notice period (currently in a perm role).
2. My thinking is to resign THEN find a job - or are there companies out there that will wait four weeks? Recruitment agents seem to think this is unlikely.
3. I'm searching jobserve, jobsite and monster, any others worth looking at? I work as a LAMP senior developer.

Your 4 weeks notice is not an issue. they are not putting you forward for other reasons.I've worked one previous contract, which was initially for six months. The contract was terminated early (client abandoned project).

I can't help with Q1, Im just on my first contract myself so no experience. I've worked one previous contract, which was initially for six months. The contract was terminated early (client abandoned project).

With regard to Q2, I was the same. Perm/4weeks notice and had to bite the bullet and resign with no other job to go to. On my 4th week of notice I was offered 2 seperate contracts and managed to change over with only 2 days off.
And Q3, those are the 3 I use so Id be interested to see any suggestions for others.

Skillset is PHP, up to PHP 5 with good OO skills, MySQL server admin including optimisation/db design, Linux server admin. About 8 years experience with all these things.
I don't think the agents are messing about, because they call me based on my CV, then go into great depths about the role, only to go quiet when I say "4 weeks notice". Then the intake of breath and dejected tone is noticable

John, just give your notice in and then get on the application case in two weeks time. I don't think the agents are messing about, because they call me based on my CV, then go into great depths about the role, only to go quiet when I say "4 weeks notice". If you work on projects then getting binned is an occupational hazard. And a plus point when it comes to tax matters.
I reckon 50% of my contracts have been ended early due to client mergers etc
Be creative about the notice period. You can say something like "Well, it should be 4 weeks, but there may well be some flexibilty, I have some holiday due".
An agent's favourite candidate is one who is desperate for the job. Someone who won't say no when it comes to it. Since you are already in a job, you can hum and ha or look at other options, which scares agents.
Make sure you make them aware that you are 100% committed to the move. You have the LTD Co etc etc
But to be honest 4 weeks notice is nothing. Most clients will wait unless it is "must start tommorrow" and even when I have been for a "must start tommorrow" interview it has taken a few weeks.
