Ford Zetec Heat Gage Not Working ??

Hello
This is the 3dr car with the same Zetec engine and they have all had the same problem with the Heat gage not workng, its never botherd me before but in April my brother and i are doing a Calais to Casablanca run in a car that cost's under £100 pounds. I how have the Banger (1800 Zetec) and as its going to be geting a hard time over 1800 miles in 5 days id like to have an idea when its over heating.
im guessing that this is a common problem with this car.

are you sure its the temp gauge that isnt working. It could be a knackered radiator stat and the car is running cold.

do the heaters get hot fairly quickly when driving the car from cold?

no it gets hot just as it should, but just dosent reed anything on the gage,
i no its going to be something realy sily and hopefuly cheep.
if it was worth more money i would just reaplace the lot untill it starts working, just the idear is to make it road worthy for as cheep as possable.

Try a new water temp sensor firstly.
