I saw this on the (WA) news last night as a new proposal by the government for breaking speed limits.

Are they serious?!

Yes they are very serious.

I think seatbelts is going up to $1000 or something outrageous.

Its a bloody silly thing not wearing a seatbelt...but the sort of money they are talking about with these new fines is going to ruin some people! It should be on a sliding scale, the fines are heading to being a weeks wages for some people but if your lucky enough to earn $3K a week and own a $90K Commodore your going to shrug it off and not really be punished by it.

Part of this crap goes down to getting votes...
If the government invested heavily in driver education it doesnt LOOK like they are really doing anything because for most normal drivers on a normal day they are not going to notice anything on the roads, its pretty rare you meet a hoon on the road.
Because the average tax payer can't see results they begin to question the expenditure.

Also the average voter is well in to being middle aged here...average voters like to see the goverment and the police stick it to the bad bad hoons (no matter the circumstances that led to them being pulled over) and punish them. Educating them looks like an easy way out and is not viewed as a punishment.

Also most people view driving as a right and most people view it as nothing but a tool to use to get to work...they dont want to pay lots to learn to drive and and pay lots to sit the tests and they cant be bothered to learn any car control skills..."Why should I do all this edumacation when all I want is to go to work blah blah woe is me I'm a poor battler blah blah"
Point being people dont want a goverment that makes people think for themselves and work hard for their license...easy fix to this is to keep it easy to get your license, fill the press with reports on evil car owners and then fine the crap out of them to appear like they are getting results.

Thats my poorly explained theory anyway biggrin

Yes...because the motorist is the root of all evil and must be punished. Here is a stunning example...

Plod in Melbourne are becoming increasingly concerned about the growing number of apparently unprovoked bashings happening in the city...mainly because they have to get of their fat arses and do something, instead of letting a camera generate the revenue...(although, could it be possible to install pedestrian cameras to catch people running on the pavement...if they are running they are either 1) running away from a crime and therefore guilty, or 2) running to a crime and therefore guilty...)

Anyway, the big lardy bird who runs the local plod recently announced the main areas they are going to target from the comfort of their airconditioned cars/offices.....can you guess some of the things on the list? Here are two true items:
1) noisy cars
2) dangerous driving (aka hooning)

WTF yikes

..because obviously when I'm out driving the droning from the exhaust of my Commodore and the squeel of its tyres eventually pushes me over the edge rage and I have to get out and kick the nearest pedestrian to death to make me feel better.

Rant over.

Well, you lot elected them, didn't you?

If you don't like it, get out & campaign for the other lot. They weren't quite so money hungry.

Its the same in NSW too... I got caught with a mobile camera in a vehicle (Which they dont have to give warning signs for apparently) and received a $690 pentalty for the pleasure... Speeding over here is a costly mistake to make. I asked for the picture too but it never arrived!

It would have been the same whoever got voted in...road safety is a big subject and it gets the votes and anyone seen to be supposedly fixing the issue is going to be popular.
