Hi

My wife is currently visiting her family in Queensland, and one of the jobs is to sort out a new car for my mother in law. Bit confused as to the way pricing works there, and what extra is charged on top of the car price to get to a Drive Away price.

Basically, they are looking at a Hyundai i30 SLX, metallic paint but no other extras, cost according to the Hyundai website should be about $25,000, but by the time the dealer had finished, the drive away price was nearer $30,000. He was asked for a price breakdown, but what was given is so vague that it is useless.

Does this sound right?

Thanks for the help

Every state is different so can't help you with specific breakdown. The price advertised will usually have small print "plus on road costs" which includes "dealer delivery" and state stamp duty. I believe WA has the highest rate of stamp duty.

ETA oh and if you are an inexperienced buyer, it would be very easy for the dealer to add on all sorts of "extras", extended warranty (that ties you to them for servicing), paint & upholstery "protection, accesories at inflated prices, etc etc...

Be very very careful that the person doing the buying does NOT sign anything until they actually want to buy.

Even main dealers have a habit of getting you to sign 'an offer just so my boss knows whats going on' when in fact it is the contract to purchase the car.

I'm in WA to but $28 - $30K on the road sounds about right..

There is:

Stamp duty
Vehicle transfer
CTP (compulsory third party insurance)
Dealer delivery
Registration

Cant think of any more but you get the idea!
