Question for the Subaru specialists

Just idle thoughts more than anythign after going through some pictures of my old Legacy Turbo last night.

Would the engine and drivetrain from say, a blob-eye impreza fit in the '92 era Legacy?

For example, could the mechanicals from something like this be made to fit into something like this, or would it need to be from an earlier model? I only mentioned the later STI as i'm fairly sure the engine would stronger than the classics, plus you would have the advantage of a 6 speed box.

I'm more thinking if i could find various crashed Impreza STI's (shouldn't be that hard), is it possible to transplant those parts into the Legacy. I've always like the idea of a rusting old estate car with a genuine 400+bhp.

As i said, just idle thoughts, but how much you reckon it would cost, if it was possible?

I see no reason why not for the engine, not sure about the gearbox.

Yes it can, and it's been done, at least for Imprezas. A 2005 STi into a 93 WRX IIRC.

The 6 speed box is a bit of a tight fit in the "classic" transmission tunnel so you'd need to think carefully about intercooling, but it's all possible.

There are a few folk on www.type-ra.co.uk dropping classic STi-RA running gear into early Legacy RS bodies (I think mostly in Aus where the RA Imprezas can't be road-registered). The classic Impreza was an evolution from the gen1 Legacy in chassis design etc, not sure how much extra work it would take for newage STi bits.
