I am looking at possibly getting an external sound card for live recording onto a laptop.

I am not looking for multi-track, just rather something that will handle a 3/4" jack input without distortion. Most mic inputs on laptops are just not up to scratch.

Any musings?

I use a USB soundblaster external sound card - does the job. Though if I was doing it again I'd probably go for the 7.1 creative Audiology PCMIA card.

how does it cope with recording? Pity it doesn't have anything more than a 3.5mm jack ...

I don't know how much you want to spend but take a look at www.studiospares.com and they do loads of stuff.

Something like this will work

Do you have a firewire port? If so that would be a better option than USB.
