this is mainly directed at the fiesta st owners, but what petrol do people use, bog standard or v-power etc. i cant see v-power giving my st any performance advantage, maybe lub the engine better, but do people get a better mpg from it making it worth while to buy?
i tend to stick with just esso. My work is based at bp grangemouth and have been told the fuels sold to tesco, asda etc arent as high quality thats why they can sell them at a cheaper price than shell etc.
intrested to hear what other peoples findings are.

OK. Petrol as it leaves the refinery to it's "customer" is exactly the same as for any other "customer", though a particular "brand" will have it's own additives. The supermarket chains go with a base BS standard additive, whilst the likes of Shell and BP, for example, will have their own unique blends.
In respect of octane ratings, you will only notice a difference in using a super-unleaded if you use it from new. Over time, and many thousands of miles, the benefits of it's higher quality additives and detergents will keep valve seats, injectors and pistons cleaner, thereby maintaining tolerances and therefore mpg. Do not believe that it will give you improved power. All a higher octane rated fuel does is increase that fuels resistance to detonation (a good thing).
I use Shell V-Power 99RON as my car is mapped for 97RON and the extra 2 points adds a safety factor into the equation.
However, during the summer if it is very hot and humid, fuel can lose up to 2 octane points, which obviously is not a good thing.

As for comparing brands, personally I'd put BP Ultimate in 3rd place behind Shell V-Power and Tesco Super 99.

What makes you think tesco is better than shell? Have you done any tests or is it subjective?
As all the petrochemists i know say shell is light years ahead of anyone.
As for no benefit unless from new, that's not true, the better detergents in V-power will stop crap accumulating.

Of course fuel gives you power as well, as you can run it leaner before detonation happens.

Where did you read hot weather causes the RON of fuel to decrease and over what time?

I didn't actually say Tesco is better than Shell. Re-read what I wrote. I use V-Power !
Use of a higher octane rated fuel will only give you more resistance to detonation and not give you more power, unless the car is mapped for it.

Do you know what a knock sensor is?
And what it does?

also you said:

So by your inference that reads:

1. Tesco
2. Shell
3. BP

Whereas Tesco wouldn't even feature on that list for me, using ethanol to boost the RON is not a good way of doing things.

Yes I do know what a knock sensor is and i know the Focus doesn't have one !
Anyway, this is getting off the OP's question, to which you haven't actually offered any advice, however I will see if I can dig out the information I saw regarding loss of octane points in fuel.
As for ethanol additives, you'd best not go to mainland Europe then wink
