When I am sat close to my wireless router I have perfect internet connection but in the last week when I have taken the laptop upstairs the connection is lost very easily.
Is there a way of checkin the connection strength on the laptop so know if its a problem with either the laptop or the router?

NetStumbler is the program you want.

I suspect you've got either DECT phones or someone else using the same WIFI channel as you.

Smiler.

If you live inside a microwave oven you can have trouble getting wireless reception as well. Rats usually fit, though you'll need a small laptop like an Asus Eee, I suppose.

Are you using an Intel 2200BG or 3945ABG network card in a laptop? If so the driver needs to be updated beyond 9.0.14 (download from Intel.com).

Early versions of this driver had an issue whereby you could very easily get disconnected, or the wireless signal level fluctuates wildly when the laptop is not moving..

They're all long days these days, anyway one day I'll be away, don't you say? Hey.

Had a heavy week and a weight of frustration, I'm minded to become 'off my face cyberface' (as accused on this forum frown ) so the rest of tonight's posts may be somewhat difficult to follow place completely as step reckon thread rainbow morning.

My sister had this problem at her place, turned out to be the Sky sender thing interfering. A channel change on the router cured it.
