The actuals fixing systems of my S1 bonnet are completely destroyed ! The little vertical tubes in front of the chassis are cracked (rust and previous shock certainly due to stupid drivers in Paris).

So now i have to change these tubes and i'm thinking about a system to remove bonnet quickly when i have to work around the engine.

Does some of you already modify it in the same way ?

Had the bonnet mounts replaced on mine a couple of years ago, combination of rust and holding up half a ton of bonnet was finally too much for them. Fortunately the design is very simple so it is cheap to repair. If you sort out the electrics, the bonnet comes off in five minutes (lift the car a few inches so the bonnet goes vertical, it balances happily while you roll the car back to work on it). Definitely wouldn't fancy lifting it straight off though, and putting it back would be even worse. That thing is *heavy*.

My bonnet mountings (frame and hinge pins) were replaced a couple of months ago after someone pulled out in front of me on a roundabout.

I had to remove the bonnet a couple of weeks ago and found it quite straightforward (with two people), although having shiny new bolts etc. obviously helped.

After disconnecting the electrical multi-connector on each side, two bolts need to be removed from each hinge pin (one locking bolt and one main securing bolt) and the bonnet will then just slide forward and off (it's worth having an old duvet already laid out on the floor to rest the bonnet on).

To replace the bonnet it's simply a case of propping up the hinge pins so that they're horizontal[ish] (rather than just hanging down vertically) and then sliding the bonnet back on, after which the bolts are replaced and tightened and the eletrics reconnected.

Taking this approach also means that the bonnet doesn't have to be realigned after it's been refitted (as long as you don't let the other pairs of bolts on the hinge pins move while the bonnet's off! ).
