RWD, Fun, Modern, 10-12k - answers on a postcard...
Discussion
yes, you guessed it, it's a 'what car' thread...
I'm hoping there's some fantastic car that I've missed out somewhere..
MUST be:
RWD
Fun
Modern (at least post '95, and <50k miles)
Worthy of the PH 'skull & con-rods'
£10-12k
I have an mx5 now.. so don't even start with suggesting one of those!
Contenders so far..
errrr..... S2000
help out if you've got some good ideas!

Having a porker on the drive is very satisfying.

Yup, M3 or S2k, both are stunning to drive. Porsche 944 and 968 can probably had as well, but with any of them 50k or less at that money is gonna be rare. Early Elise's should be in the running.
Not sure if non-crashed 350z have hit 12k as yet but its one to consider.
Also, not sure when production stopped but there are tons of the old Jap guard - 300zx, Supra, Skyline, etc

RX-8. Value for money can't be beat. Oh, and at least try one before listening to the naysayers.
10-11k will now get you one still in warranty with low miles and fully loaded.
You won't get a good 350Z for anywhere near that money. Which people seem to conveniently forget when comparing them....

Took an S2000 for a spin last weekend in a bid answer exactly the same question for a friend...
...I'm resmitten.
Of all the suggestions on this page it is the one that will come closest to a TVR type, long nosed, big hearted, top down, RWD sports car experience. That's my ideal. A 2.8 Z3 might run it a close second, but is more of a roadster. Having driven one of those too, the quicker witted Honda would get my vote.
The complete responsiveness of that phenominal engine and the angry swarm of bees up a pair of trumbones wall of noise it makes at 9,000+rpm should seal the deal by themselves. I just giggled every time I dropped a cog! What I was less prepared for was the chuck in 6th cruisability of the thing too. Surprisely versitile and a half decent boot too.
Great all rounder and early ones will be hitting the bottom of the depreciation curve around about a year's time, so if you're canny enough to pick one up that has had it major servicing (timing belt specifically) recently done, your only cost headache will be insurance... but that would be the same for any car listed here.
I'm seriously wanting one for my next set of wheels in about a year, and it is not an unrealistic goal.
Go on, you know you want to!

Just got an S2k and really happy with it... if you are blowing your full budget then you know you can rely on the build quality of a Honda... the only down fall of it IMO is the interior is slightly dated, but its all about the driving for me!
Strange. I liked the interior of the S2k but couldn't live with the way it drove.
I'm looking at the same price range, although I am considering foregoing the RWD bit. My list so far is:
S2000 (probably higher mielage)
RX8
Griffith
Chimaera
TVR S (probably cheapest)
MX 5
Audi TT Mk1
Focus ST
Elise S1 (S2 too pricey)
Clio V6
Although I'm leaning towards staying in the TVR gang, I have strange hankerings for the Clio V6 and the Focus ST!!! I think I need a doctor...

Wow.. thanks for the fantastic response everyone!!
damn it, why don't I have the cash to hand NOW!!
Have looked long and hard at 350Z's.. imports available at £14k, but it's just a bit too much cash sadly...
RX8 is tempting.. will try one possibly when I've sold my car.
Boxster - would always feel I'd bought the wrong car if I didn't get an 'S'
(they can't be available for £12k surely!?!?!?)
Don't want a TVR, and Elise/VX variants are a little too impractical for what I want.
M3's are no doubt awesome cars for the money.. but just aren't really my thing.
964 would be awesome, but a £12k example is going to be tired and have some not inconsiderable running costs looming surely?
ClioV6 - love the idea of it.. just can't bring myself to buy a renault
Thanks again all, and keep 'em coming.
at the moment my thoughts of an S2k seem to me confirmed.. although I will try an RX8 (quite like the 4-seats idea).. but that 968
didn't know they still existed at sub-light-years mileages!! seriously tempting!
