Today has been sent to try me, not only have i had a real shitty day at work but half way to birmingham city centre my faithful mini decides to loose power (in rush hour traffic) , it just seemed to be blowing it out at the carb. At first i thought it was running out of petrol but after filling up and waiting a while it just got worse.

my wife and two kids were in the car which made things worse too, but anyway i put the bonnet up and pulled on the throttle a few times and a loud blowing noise is coming from the carb area in fact it sounded like it was coming more so from the air fiter which is why im led to believe it carb problems and not a major problem (i hope). I noticed the pipe which i think is the anti-dieseling pipe had popped off the carb half way and the clip was not fastened. Im 99.99999999% sure that i fastened every clip on the carb pipes as i would make 2-3 checks after working on the carb every time, so 1 of my questions is could that pipe have popped off a little due to a blockage or does the anti-dieseling pipe not use that much pressure. And if it aint a blockage what could it be? Has anyone encountered this problem in the past, hopefully someone can shine a little light on this for me as im probly gonna take the carb apart tomorow.

Additional info: its the orginal 1.50 su carb 93-94, my dashpot is full, all pipes are connected, had new needle and spring, new gaskets all round, new piston damper , had a 2hr rolling road tune session and has been running fine since (about 2 weeks). There has been a slight smell coming through the blowers into the car for a few days (smells a bit like crayon burning). She refuses to stall but idles at about 200rpm. Thanks in advance for any help..neale..

if its roaring from the carb/airfilter when it is reved then it could be the head gaskit between pot 2 & 3 i had the same and it sounded as if the exhust had gone try swaping 2 & 3 plug lead over if it makes no difference it could be that.

thanks mate, when you say swap plug leads over, do you mean just on the plug side and not dizzy side?

If it's gone between 2 and 3 there may be no contamination of fluids. Actually you don't need to fit plug leads 2 & 3 the wrong way round, just run the engine and remove first no. 2 lead then no. 3 and see what happens. If the tickover remains the same with 2 and/or 3 removed, then it's a compression problem or a distributor problem. Alternatively, just get a compression test done for real final confirmation.
If you do need a new gasket, make sure it's part number is BK450, which is the black composite one.
