Is V.a.t. applicable???
Discussion
Hi all. a simple question i think, all my business sales so far have been to uk customers, i write an invoice add the v.a.t. and hey presto. however i have now an american company doing some business with me... do i just leave the v.a.t. off or do they reclaim it? how does it work??Many thanks. .
Are you supplying goods or services?
If you are supplying services, in what country is the service being supplied?
You cannot assume that the supply of services to a foreign customer can be automatically Zero Rated.
The VAT rules for the supply of goods to foreign customers (i.e. exporting of goods) are very different for the supply of services to foreign customers.

If you deliver goods to a UK address, with no evidence of export, then you still charge the Customer VAT at 17.5%. It doesn't matter that it's a US company.
If you deliver goods abroad yourself or arrange for their delivery, then you will have evidence of export yourself (shipping documents etc), so the supply of goods will be zero rated.
The above statements only apply to goods moving (or being moved) outside of the EC. Within the EC there are different rules.

Hmmmm..
Goods and services i think. I build and supply scenery mainly for theatres and television commercials. The project i am currently working on is the supply of some "theming" objects which are to be installed on a cruise ship. the company commissioning us are american based in fort lauderdale, whereas the ship is being fitted out in a shipyard in italy. so the goods will travel from my workshops in Oldham to Italy. then one or two of us will go to the ship (in Italy) to do a kind of final fit & handover. that bit could be the services bit. What do you think??
