Is that JM a short scale neck? I fancy another guitar for a milestone birthday next year, but I'm looking at models with a scale like my (Epiphone) Les Paul's 24.75". That JM looks less 'fussy' than the Jaguar (I don't like all the slide switches as they look a bit home made to me). Maybe a different pick guard and I'll add it to my list of potentials.

(That or a custom made short scale Telecaster).

I have a Les Paul, a Palo Escrito Tele, an SG, a PRS, a Ron Kirn & three strats spanning 1960 - 2007 & no matter what I try/buy, I always come back to the strats. Fenders just do it for me. The problem with that is that whenever they try something new, people complain & ask for '62 reissues.

That's not just me saying that, it comes from an interview I read with John Cruz. They are effectively a hostage to their past & yet it shows how good the original designs were.

It's the same scale length as the other JM -

25.5 inch iirc

Thanks for the feedback Lucas. I've got over a year to go yet so I'm just doing my research at the moment.

The Ibanez arrived and I've had a chance to play it now. The whole caboodle was owned by a heavy smoker so the thing stinks, but some lemon oil has gone a long way to sorting that. The guitar bag went in the washing machine and I think has improved it, but the washing machine slightly smells of smoke now! eek I'll stick another wash on before the missus notices and hope it clears it.

Last night I did a back to back comparison with my Epiphone LP (RS Guitarworks bumblebee caps, Seymour Duncans and Gibson switch) and I was surprised at how muddy the Ibanez pups sounded. Perhaps I've just got used to hearing a very detailed, rich and accurate sound from my LP, but the INF4 and INF3 pups on the Ibanez were awful. I may change the bridge pup for perhaps a Seymour Duncan Sh-4 or similar, but I'm tempted to try throwing in something like an SD Black Winter.

Has anyone tried the really high output pups like the Black Winter? What are they like compared to the SD SH-4? I can only imagine they're like the SH-4, but with the guitar volume turned up to 11.

Hey all, thought I'd join in with a couple of mine smile

I built the one on the left as my wife's Christmas present last year - it's neck through with the Strandberg "Endurneck" profile (if anyone's ever heard of that!) - because of the neck profile it's ridiculously comfortable to play for me:

A peek at the back:

Note to self: I'm never using Stainless steel fretwire ever again - it's an absolute pain to work with and ruins tools!

This is my latest completed build - 7 string Strandberg clone, again with the "Endurneck" profile. It's got a one piece Rosewood neck with a multiple scale (25.5" - 27") fretboard. Because of the fanned frets, it doesn't feel any larger than normal and feels pretty natural to play:

That body shape incidentally is designed to balance correctly on a strap and in just about any position off a strap. It works extremely well smile

Finally, the Hohner G3T - a Steinberger clone. I picked this up pretty cheap a long time ago and it was my favourite guitar (before I built the one above!) - stupidly low action and it feels so tiny with no headstock. The pickups are pretty crappy but that's an easy fix:

There's no doubt that stainless steel is NFG for normal fretting tools, I'm currently developing different tools and techniques to cope with it, as I shall be using it a lot in the future.

Nice to see another guitar with fanned frets!

I've got a fanned neck on my Agile Pendulum Pro:

25.5" scale on the high end, 27" on the low. It's tuned down a whole step. Finding a suitable string gauge was quite difficult but it seems to work nicely now. Great sound and very, very well built.

After a quick bit of advice here. My father's 60th in October, he's taken up guitar in the last year, and plays his Taylor GS Mini every day. He's already far better than me, and wants an electric. His heroes are Hendrix, Clapton etc. and he wants to play blues so it has to be a Strat. He's played a new Mexican Strat in a local guitar shop at £437, and he liked it a lot.
But I notice my local Cash Converters has an American, late 90s Strat for £499. It'll need a proper set-up, I would think, but worth the extra money over the new Mexican?

Probably.

But worth him playing it first really.

I've owned an American Strat and a Mexican Strat, and the Mexican was actually the better playing of the two. Can't really explain why. But I preferred the 6 point trem on the Mexican to the 2-point on the American (Which is odd as my other guitars have Floyds or floating bridges).

Yes, it is worth the extra, as long as it's not too ropey. I've got a Mexican Strat (among others) and it's not as good as the US models, plus its resale value will be much lower. The price is good.

I was hoping to not have to get him to play it (surprise present and all that), but I guess that's best given the money involved!

In fact, as it's Cash converters, they'll probably take his old CD 100 in trade-in, and let me pay in installments! wink

He will need an amplifier of course, I suggest a Marshall half stack to start with, 50W head should be enough.

I'm assuming he's playing at home? A 50w half stack is probably massive overkill for a home player!

I suggest looking at some nice 5w or 15w valve amps. I love my Blackstar HT5. Still plenty of volume, but sounds good at low volumes too.

Regarding the guitar, if you can clean it up nicely and it looks good, go for it. I've bought quite a few guitars blind over the internet, so if you can check it out first to make sure there's no major problems, then you'll probably be fine.

I've given him an old Yamaha 10w practice amp for his Taylor, he can use that until he finds one he likes. He's been saving up to buy a Strat himself, so he should be able to use that money to treat himself to a nice amp - I was going to suggest that £200 Blackstar tube one?

I did wonder smile. I've heard recommendations such as that made on guitar forums though, so the sarcasm is easily lost.

Speaking of guitar forums, any that you would recommend?
