Can I ask why people buy a new guitar and pay extra to have it bashed up so that it looks old, when instead they could just gig it for a few years, then they've got their own, real, scrapes and dents in it rather than other peoples' fake ones, and save some dosh as well?

Yh Paul C makes great pedals, I was in the market for a timmy but not new cause of wait list etc... Anyways the Tim came up on eBay UK I had room for it and the extra boost is great too so all in all really pleased.
The analogman stuff is exceptionally good too!

Let me know if you ever get a good answer to this one smile

I'm not a Strat man but those look lush.
I'm not a Strat man either but, to me, they both look in need of a severe refinish LOL.

My main workhorse... bought it second hand in the late 90's serial number doesn't give much away date wise. Absolute screamer of a guitar, upgraded all the electrics and hardware and gigged it like a beast.

Are you sure the intonation is correct, especially on the 5th and 6th strings?

I would be interested to hear what effect the distressing has on the playing experience.

I don't have relics but a couple of my guitars are heavily worn and they are much nicer to play...
Back of the neck is much smoother, the edges of the fretboard are worn away and not so sharp, your forearm doesn't stick to the paint work.
I can only assume that a relic has that played in feel.
If you don't have the time to put the hours in to break in the guitar, you have the money and like the look then why not??

Why not indeed, I am totally in favour of people spending their money on whatever they fancy, and I am glad they have the opportunity to do so. I'm just finding it a bit of a struggle to see the attraction of it, but your post has helped to build the picture.

I'm still struggling too. I can see the attraction of paying over the odds for a real old guitar (I've had a few myself and would buy more if I could afford it), but not for what is after all, a fake.

Bit like putting a Fender decal on a Squier so that people think you're playing the real thing.

Yes, except it's a John Cruz Masterbuilt Custom Shop Fender Strat.

I don't have $30,000 to spend on an original. This is the next best thing.

With regards to ageing it yourself... most guitars these days have a thick poly finish on them and no matter how much it is gigged/abused it won't wear like an old guitar with a nitro finish.
I assume the heavy relics must have a nitro finish, the other argument here is that nitro is a much thinner finish and therefore you get a fuller/better tone from the wood.
I've got a 57 reissue that my old teacher had before me and between us have put in a lot of hours on the guitar, my tokai I had a mate refinish it after i bought it and its wear is a lot more aesthetically pleasing than the strat and in less time. So if you want a nitro finish on a 57 you have to factor the refinish in to the price.
Personally I don't care if someone sticks a fender decal on squire, I just care about how it sounds.

Playability wise the Relic Strats do feel fantastic, the necks are sublime.

I've got Abby Ybarra hand wound pickups in the Daphne. Sounds bloody fantastic.

Think some people need reminding that pickups are magnetic devices and therefore can only hear the strings, not the wood or the paint.
