Regarding Steve Baker at Electric Ladyland in Bristol:

Just tried the number again. Nothing. I know it's correct 'cos it's on a poster in the window!

A Google search turned up nothing but you might find this review interesting:

http://oldmarket.org.uk/traders/electric-ladyland/

I'll try knocking on the door again next time I'm passing.
Was passing again yesterday and he was there so I went in - actually stayed for an hour and a half chatting! He says the phone has been disconnected for months but he is always there (as he lives upstairs) unless he's popped down the road for some fags etc. So just bang on the back door and he'll let you in.
I was wondering what the latest was on this shop. I got an old Simms Watts valve half stack there 25 years ago and I'd live to replace it now. I'll be in the UK in August and it would be great if he was still there.

This has come up for sale. 1988, immaculate condition. Asking price 3,500 GBP.

She's not cheap, but it's a rare guitar.

Is anyone familiar with this specific model - Soloist.

Appreciate your advice, thank you.

That can't be worth £3500 surely? My Ibanez USA CG isn't worth anywhere near that and they only made 11.

Yes, that's my thinking now.

Seems rather pricey for a Soloist with a fancy paint job.

In the 80s they were still rather custom shoppy, so specs can change. But seems pretty straight up, the body is poplar neck through like all soloist. Passive PUs, the j90 in the bridge was the hottest version , but you could spec the other 2 options the j80 and the j50, but Id imagine it would have the screamer! The switches are just pup selectors instead of a 5 way switch. I think they could also have active circuitry so some will be different depending on whats been ticked. So it will need an email to the seller for full specs as they could be quite different.

Is the paint job original? As they could do custom jobs on order, so if the paint job is from 88 it might be why it has a higher premium. Bit of 'history'.

But I think its way too much. That's 777 Jem money. Check out the charvel model 6, basically a Japanese made soloist, many think the quality is the same. Still get the sharkfins and Jackson pickups.

Soloists are lovely guitars, but 3.5k? You could get a custom Mayones or Halo for that...

So a handmade in the USA Jackson is worth the same as a handmade in the USA Ibanez?

No, a Jem is MIJ, and its worth more!

They're collectable so go for a lot. The green ones which were signed by Cai are the ones that demand the high prices. Admittedly, Japanese quality is meant to be pretty good, I know that the Charvels of the late 80s were seen as equals almost to the US made Jacksons, and have often heard rave reviews on how they feel and play.

Jems will hold their value, plus the Frankenstein paintjob is an acquired taste, so I think the price is high given what other shreddy 80s guitars are out there!

That said if the paint job is from when it was ordered, and it is like new, with everything original and working like it just came out of the shop, then I could see why an *immaculate* one could go for a big price. I don't know enough about the market to say whether it is worth the asking price, but can definitely see the appeal of the definitive 80s superstrat in perfect condition!

Unfortunately my guitar room is also the Christmas-decoration-and-other-crap-we-can't-store-anywhere-else room.

But anyway, these are my Es-333 and Casino. The Tom deLonge is fantastic, got a dirty fingers pickup which is wonderfully growly.

everyone has the nasty red tortoiseshell one though....

Cheers - it's from '93 and it may well get a respray one day -

The gold scratchplate makes the sunburst tolerable for me!

My custom Jag. This pic doesn't do it justice though, it is really schweet in person. I have all custom switches and killswitch knob, and BKP pups. Nitro finish with matching headstock.

There is no way I would pay £3.5k for a Soloist or a JEM or any other guitar for that matter. £1000-£1500 will buy a very nice Soloist or two top end RGs for that matter. Mind you a guitar is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it, even if I do think some of the numbers banded about for an old Telecaster or Les Paul are absolutely insane.
I agree its a lot for this model. I don't think its mad for a guitar in general though, given they are something for life, and with 'vintage' or 'retro' (not a fan of those terms...) guitars, can be an investment.

That said, I always seem to buy cheap guitars!
