I've seen some 'vintage' guitar shops in the back of Guitarist magazine, but don't know them personally. However I have bought (non vintage) stuff from Guitar Village in Farnham and they seem to have quite a few vintage guitars.

I fancied a '65 Melody Maker, but I just couldn't justify the cost. Might buy a '65 Fender DRRi amp though. smile

Thanks. I've signed up on Reverb to see anything coming up. Looks like there is a very limited amount out there - the £3.5-4k Japanese one and not much else....

.....so...........

i've added another guitar to the set....

up to now i've got

70s large headstock fender strat usa(right hooker re strung)
90s left handed gibson les paul standard
couple of crafter acoustics
takamine acoustic

but i've been angling for 7 and 8 stringers for some time now. the odd music store stocks them but i've never found a left hooker to try out.

coming monday is this little beauty (google image)...i thought i'd start at the cheap end and if it starts to feel good grade up from there.

should be a very interesting couple of months ahead!

Theoretically.... if I had a big birthday coming up, and I wanted a Gibson Flying-V from the year of my birth, where would be good places to look for this please?

(I've seen the Explorers out there, but a V is much more 'me'....)

Thank you!
I have a similar idea, big birthday at the start of next year and have asked the OH for a birth year Les Paul. Notwithstanding the fact it's rather out of budget, I've seen some very tasty guitars for sale by NOTOM Guitars on Denmark Street. Their web shop is even in year order.

That was kind of my thought with the 50s Tribute I bought last week (a month early, but who cares?). Though in this case the '50s' bit is because I'm going into my 50s and not that I was born in them. smile

Very nice. Have you played a 7-8 string before? It's a whole different ball game. smile

Not yet!......i haven't found anyone with a physical left hooker to try so I just jumped in.
I tend to "think" in much lower register . I actually tune down my low E to a D then drop everything in unison a further 2 steps so my low end is a C.
I've been looking at some weird 8 string tunings used by guys like tosin abasi but to be honest I'll see how I go using my current tunings then adding in my 2 new lower strings in additional fifths or maybe keep it simple and mimic the C and D octavised.
One things for sure......I'm looking forward to some epic sized spanned chords!

Nooooo!!!! I was GASing for an SG and that model would have been the version I would have liked since I wanted 'something' with P90s. I've already got my 50s Tribute LP from a deal of the day two weeks ago, but I'd have hung on if I'd known...

I'm going over to their Epsom shop on Friday to try out a few heads, mostly Marshall ones (very tempted by the 1 watt JMP-1 if they still have one left by then), though might try an Egnater 15 watt 'tweaker' which seems to be like an all valve modelling amp.

...might come home with both. evil A second hand Vox Lil Night Train is coming tomorrow as well, which I want for some clean(ish) Strat tones for recording/home practice.

PS, looks like they sold out of the SG 50s Tribute, so I don't feel so bad now. smile

Just bought one of these from Amazon in the Black Friday week deal for £399. eek

Spec is amazing, the hardshell case is worth £200 on it's own FFS.

Currenbtly feeling like I've robbed them...

I better not show this to Mrs Interloper, she bought me the exact same spec SG earlier in the year for closer to £600!

I hope you enjoy it, I certainly like mine.

well....this fking monster turned up yesterday. after noodling for an hour i picked up my les paul and it felt like a toothpick in my hands!

i think the key to success with this thing is going to be the tuning.
i used a standard 8 string tuning to begin with ie. standard 6 string tuning of EADGBE with the additional second lowest and lowest being B and F# respectively.

the problem i have with this is that i haven't played a standard tuned guitar in nearly 20 years instead preferring to drop the E to a D then tuning the whole guitar down a further 2 steps.

by having the normal bit of the guitar up in E it's thrown out the way i piece riffs together completely.

i have started to look at the tunings of other 8 string players like tosin abasi(animals as leaders), stephen carpenter(deftones), and acle khanney( tesseract) and everyone tunes differently!!

i tried to tune the 6 strings to my normal (ie dropC) but by the time i octavize the 2 lowest strings i lose all cohesion and the register is simply too low to even hear properly...it just sounds like a muddy mess.

.....this is gonna take some getting used to!!

Leaves nowhere for the bass player to go to if you ever take it into a band situation too. Unless your bassist goes for the Hooky approach then you'll fit nicely beneath him smile

Or go for a Royal Blood type set up and you won't need a bassist wink

I thought they managed without a guitarist?

Play around with the string gauges a bit, put string 7 as a C, have 7-2 tuned as per your normal six string, and then a high and low string either side?

Creating a problem that doesn't exist.
