SC clearance?

I need some clarification about obtaining SC clearance.

From what I have read on the mod site it can only apply for it if I have a "sponsor", is this correct?

I wanted to become cleared to help with applying for a few contracts but this isn't looking possible now.

Yep, thats correct. Which doesn't really help you out for a contracting role.

The sponsor will be from the area you are working in and they basically fill in and sign off the forms you've completed.

It can take up to 3 months for the wheels to turn in order for clearence to get granted.

I'm assuming the potential client wants pre cleared contractors? You could try and get in and get them to sponsor you in the contract may last more than 3 months.
