Just been lurking with the BMW boys for some reason. I thought our shower here were a bit illiterate (your not you're, apostrophes on plurals, "should of", etc) but that lot are on another level.

One's talking about his brakes "ceasing" instead of seizing and some of the replies duplicate the error lol.

What can it mean?

People using "there" instead of "their" is another irritation. Standards of written English are slipping

My 13 year old daughter looked at me as though I'd just landed from Mars at the weekend when I pulled her up on her use of fone, rather than phone in a text. Proper spelling is just so un-cool these days ranting

They say that if you put an infinite number of monkeys at an infinite number of typewriters, that eventually, they'll write all of the great works. I figure that 'M' stands for monkeys, and if we read their output in that forum long enough, they'll get it right eventually.

Strange, I have just sold my 911 and have bought a BMW M6 - since doing so, I have felt my intelligence slipping on a day by day basis and find I have an uncontrollable urge to talk in TLAs (Three Letter Abbreviations). Things like why is S6 only available on the SMG with DSC off and EDC on sport etc. etc.

So, what should be next on my shopping list to ensure I do not become totally illiterate in the future? Lexus, Jaguar?

LOL. You have been spending too much time on there - TLA is more commonly used to stand for "Three Letter Acronym"

It is a different drive to my previous Turbo X50. In some ways the Turbo wipes the floor with it, in others the BMW seems like a different class of car. Performance wise, delivery is different - but I don't think there is a lot in it. The noise of the M6 is to die for, the cabin is an impressive place to be - the turbo had alot more mechanical grip.

On the whole, I am very pleased and it will hopefully keep me amused until the 997 Turbo starts becoming affordable :-)

Jon.

I understood that an acronym was supposed to spell out a word in itself, rather than just be a few initial letters?

It's both. It's to form a "word", but LOL, IMHO, ROFL, NIMBY and TLA etc all count as "words". Hence, TLA is a pun, as it is indeed a "TLA" itself.

http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&defl=en&a...
Hmm scratchchin All but one of those definitions said that an acronym is a word in itself, even if that has been formed from a set of initials (SCUBA, NASA etc). So, unless you pronounce IMHO as, say, "imm-hoe" (and who would?) it would not normally qualify as a proper acronym.

Right, who's for discussing mnemonics next? wink

I have to admit, I am rather embarrassed to be a part of the ///M community sometimes. It can get a little too 'street' which does tend to lower the tone a tad.

However, there is still a dedicated and enthusiastic core kru (wink) group who own M-cars for the right reason.
