Just got 335 Miles before running onto reserve on a standard 6.0 VXR.
Mixture of Motorway, A road and a bit of Town. Still more than kept up with traffic.Trying to presuade the wife that its not that bad.

Stop trying to persuade the wife and just tell her how it is!! FFS married couples!.... edit - unless she is a sugar mummy and your living off her money!

It's my wife who says to me that 19mpg ain't that bad ... what can I say, she's only used to cars that you put petrol in regularly. If we ever buy a 2nd car we're screwed, as she'll suddenly sus that 19mpg isn't great... but until then

I get an average of 13.8mpg
Don't care if it's a record or not. When I need more fuel (most days) I buy more fuel!

408 in a vxr8 - pretty much a steady 50-60 on the motorway (crappy weather conditions at night) and still some left in the tank

Stoke on Trent to Perth(Scotland not Oz) 289 mainly motorway miles, 1 dot over half a tank.Sat just over 70 with cruise control on all the way - apart from the occasional slow down. Not bad for a 5.7,beats my old 2.6 Vectra hands down, and dammed site more comfortable.

I have never got more than 250 miles from a tank. Average is about 17mpg most of the time & if I drive like a grandad that goes up to 18. I've given up worrying about it now!

I think VXRs must do more mpg than CV8s

M/Way 98miles/3.35gall = 29.3mpg; whole journey 152m/5.51 = 27.6.

Mind you it's only a 5.7 and I drove like a saint. And it was a bit boring.

Thats and LS1 2000 R8.
Are you supercharged? Maybe you need to try a long distance motorway jaunt? Sitting at 1800rpm in 6th for hours is good for economy.

Yes, I'm SC but that's made little difference. Fuel consumption's always been crap and driving at 80mph in 6th yields little more that 26mpg. My lean cruise and everything has been checked so I know it has nothing to do with the tune and the wortec tune I had before was the same.

My brother has a 2.0 petrol Passat and he struggles to better 28mpg in that so how you guys are getting 30mpg+ from your 6.0 is beyond me, I can only assume you never ever hit traffic.

27.8mpg once on the way to Billing last year... usually around 15mpg due to the roads here. Then again, I never use it (it's an ornament) so I don't care :P

VXR8 has worse economy according to Oz official fuel stats. Auto is better than manual. Plus it has a 75L tank from memory. 10% larger than the old Monaro IIRC.
My car had 11.2:1 compression which helps with economy plus efficient intake and exhaust setup (no cats) Plus ran open loop all the time with leaner than stoich (15:1) as well as lean cruise and WOT AFR of 13.1:1.
Stock convoluted airbox, heated supercharged air, plus supercharger load dont add up to fuel efficiency, power yes, economy not really. Compared to a 7L engine yes, but not compared to an efficient NA. No such thing as a free lunch most of the time.

Hi all,
I have had my 2004 monaro for 6 months now and have come to terms with the economy, or lack of economy.
a few years back i had a 4ltr cherokee and could never get any better than 18.5mpg, i did vow never to go there again when i replaced it with a 3ltr 406 coupe, which i soon managed to reduce to an average 25mpg. However lets face it a smile a mile is hard to achieve in any other way so the ro wins hands down.
I have had as high as 25 - 26mpg on a run and as low as 16 in traffic, crossing london is not economical. My average on mixed driving is 18 - 19.5 mpg.
However the most uneconomical is the 2 mile run to sainsbury's, the "pop up the road" on a cold engine. Years ago my Range Rover ( yeah well it was her choice ) on the school run was averaging 4.5mpg . I rekon the ro is very similar, so if you go out, get it warm, and have some fun, it will improve economy !!!!!
keep up the good work

I find the harder you drive the ro the better the fuel economy, I know it seems to defy common sense but its the way it is for me.

I also find 6th a waste of time and gives me no increase in mpg, in fact if anything using it makes it worse. Hoofing it always gives me better economy (not that I'm complaining)

My guess it that the engine is just more efficient at the higher revs say around the 4k-redline mark. Any one else find this?

I've had my VZ since christmas and have covered about 1400 miles since. This has consisted of half motorway driving and a mixture of the rest (including a fare ammount flooring it). I reset the meter the day i picked it up and I'm currently showing an average of 23.3 mpg. The car has a wortec pipe and remap etc. I agree that cold starts and short stop start journeys destroy fuel economy, you can watch the guage drop, but once warm its amazing what can be achieved. The trick is not to ride the throttle unecessarily. With such a big motor the inertia produced on the overun seems to maintain road speed for ages with no pedal at all. So if your coming up to lights or a junction just come off the throttle much earlier instead of wacking on the brakes when you get there, it makes a huge difference in economy with little effect on the journey. Now i'm not suggesting you drive like a pussy but a few subtle changes in approach seemed to work for me. Big engine motors can offer a lot benefits (not least 400hp) if driven a certain way so why drive a 5.7+ monaro like an eleven hundred fiesta? save ya juice for the worthwhile foot down oppurtunities.

Sod that, if I wanted fuel economy I would have bought a Prius and no matter what you do, fuel consumption will be crap compared to other cars. I drive a Supercharged V8 because I want to be Mad Max!
