Just bought a luvverly 96 Griff, 21000 miles, runs like a swiss watch etc. Just one query (oo err!). On its last service (TVR main dealer) it had a 'sports exhaust modification' whereby they cut the exhaust, remove some of the muffler material and weld it back together so that it looks nice and standard. Now this sounds wonderful (think NASCAR!) but I had heard that this kind of mod can drastically reduce power because the rover V8 is rather fond of back pressure. Any thoughts anybody? The car is plenty quick, although not as vigorous as I might have imagined something that weighs less than a ford fiesta but has 5 times the power might be! Are there any griff owners in the northants area who would be willing to meet up with me somewhere with a view to riding in each others cars to test the acceleration/engine response etc? Drink (but not more than one!) on me!!!

I had exactly the same modification done on my 95N Griff a couple of months ago by Fernhurst TVR. I was very cautious of having it done because I didn't want to lose any power and when I booked it in they assured me it wouldn't have any negative effects.

After living with it for a while now I can't say I've noticed any real reduction in power but I'm still quite keen to have it checked out on a rolling road. Look at it this way, it still goes like a rocket but now sounds even better so overall I'm very happy with it. Don't think the neighbours feel the same way though!!

I did a simlar thing recently on a griff 500 .. but took the silencer out completely
the silencer has perforated straight through pipes, you don't change the back pressue by removing those for stright tubes, you can't get better flow than that anyway. There's more restriction in the manifold precats than anywhere else in the system so rest assured you're not down on power.

So Joolz - compared to just taking the sound proofing out of my G500s middle boxes like you did in March... and then taking the boxes out completely and putting straight pipes in... which mod sounds best???

Mine sounds great, but I'm just dying to try straight pipes... it's just expensive to correct if the car doesn't sound as good.

In theory I would guess that with the boxes off completely, the sound out of the back would be a little louder and a little deeper.... am I wrong, or just missing out on even more acoustic delight?!!

i had fernuhurst do mine and it is an awesome noise, with no reduction in power. took the car down to le mans, and it was up there with a tubied f355 sound and performance wise, but we both lost out to a 456 on top end

Catch up man, you're about a year behind the times!

Edited to say assume you meant ':Sunstyleee: Joolz in Girlfriend shock' rather than 'Griff with no silencer is very loud indeed' news

Well done Mr.B a fine year, You'll be grining a fair while.

Had the straight through pipes mod on mine and it sounds quite evil, would like to Take the whole cats out one day, but there is the problem with MOTs and Track day noise.

I did mine last weekend. I don't know exactly how Joolz did his but if you simply cut out the box totally and replace with pipes you lose three mounting points and I wasn't happy to do that, I cut out the wrap around part of the box leaving the ends and mounts in place removed all the wadding then cut out one perforated tube at a time and welding in 60mm dia ERW in there place. The same end result as Joolz but it keeps all the mountings. Oh yes and it makes your ears bleed.

PS I didn't like my neighbours anyway

I had straight through pipes put in the rear and precats taken out by Peninsular on my Griff 500.Sound is pure NASCAR with no obvious signs of impact on performance but I do get a bit of crackle and pop if I nail it in low gears!

Hi Mel .. no I did it the other way .. chop the box out complete with mountings .. then make new mountings for the straight pipes, that way you can easily weld the box back in place and it doesn't look like it's been messed with and the welding bit is easy. Both ways are good though cos what you're really after is the sound .. yippeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

Gutted - can't get to Mania as that's the weekend I'm taking the Griff down to Spain... hmm, maybe not too gutted perhaps

Now trying to figure out who the hell I can find to take my middle boxes out before next Friday??? - Nerja has very narrow streets you see... oh the echos

Rest assured - I will be down the DVD shop post haste to try and find a copy of Bullit - it's one of those films that I've never got round to seeing.

I take it that in your general opinion Joolz, mine will be louder without the boxes? I know when you did the mod for me in March you were in two minds as you'd done one 500 and it hadn't made a massive difference? It's the "harsher" sound I'm not sure about, I relate harsh to being a higher note - whereas I love the really deep bass throb at idle - sorry just had a thought - are we talking sound at idle or full throttle? Basically - sound of a pile driver at idle, NASCAR at throttle - that'll do nicely please!

Corrine - look forward to hearing your car sometime

It sounds like a tugboat at idle, and under throttle, like a Spitfire taking off (the descrption given by one of Psychobert's neighbours when I dropped him off one night). Pops and bangs on the overrun make my tummy turn over.

If I bring it in to work, people on the 4th floor know I'm in the car park. That what you're looking for?

(yes, I have fantastic neighbours)

Oh yes I also picked up a second hand exhaust from a broken Griff for £75 before I cut it about, that way my original is still leaning in the corner of the Garage for track days and religous holidays

I can see a 'who's got the best modded exhaust' sound off at Mania coming up
Are pussyless Chimaera's alowed to join in?
Had a cracking quote from a women who's house we went to look at 'is it s'posed to make that noise?'
One thing I would quite like is flames out the back, I know it's childish, I know it's a waste of fuel, but it just looks so cool but I've really got more important things to sort out first

Just a reminder Raceboy, the cars are plastic. The bottom of your Chimp may come to resemble that of a Baboon's.

Maybe an improvement.
