R6 (and other) advice...

Hi All, 
First post in 'Biker Banter' so be gentle....
I have decided that I am going to buy myself an R6.
(I have my heart set on an R6, so no suggestions of other bike to consider please - you'll just confuse me!!)
I have a (fairly) unlimited budget, but want to keep it sensible money so I'd like to spend around £5k (Bike £4k and kit £1k).

Any owners amongst you that can give me a few pointers on what to watch out for when buying an R6 second hand?
Also, what is the timeline of the bike in terms of facelifts, revisions etc?

stickers changed a bit from year to year, but there were two main model changes, (the latest version having fuel injection-"fly by wire" )

No direct experience but prefacelift (before 2003) models can suffer from gearbox problems on hard-ridden examples - the 2003 model in your post would be the one to go for!

Naivety I guess!! (wasn't aware there was much difference between them) I really liked the looks of the old one, but if the post-faclift was a better bike, and around the same money, I'd certainly go for the later model.hugepiece said:

Nice idea, but that's really pushing the budget a bit. As I've got the cash to buy outright, I'd rather not get into HP/finance situation.Momentofmadness said:

Not much to say about them really, for that money you should get a very nice 03-05 bike without any problems, I've done 15,000 miles in the last 1½ years on mine and the only problems it's had have been the hazard switch needed cleaned, and recently the TPS has also needed cleaned out (bikes idle started getting rough with occasional stalling, 15 minute job to fix).
If you go through the R6 forums like R6messagenet, don't worry about the coils issue as AFAIK it's purely a US thing, we got the Mitsubishi coils as standard over here.

The early models had more midrange and the most perfect fueling you've ever experienced (so long as nobody has changed the can). My only brand new bike! Compared with the latest 600s, it feels absolutely huge and comfy. It is a larger bike than my R1.
The later one was not a great leap onwards, although it was fuel injected.
2006- model is scalpel-like but has sod all midrange. You have to absolutely rag it to get any performance (although it come alive then!). Fine when you're in the mood but tedius any other time.

Really are great bikes, the only thing I've come across is their stability at high speed. 120+ I find it quite twitchy and so if you plan on riding one fast to get a stearing damper.
I've not had any problems with my gears although am aware of others who have experienced this. 2003+ you shouldn't have a problem though.
Check for stuff like condensation in the headlights.
