Hi, I bought some new speakers etc for my Chimaera, a mate of mine is a professional ICE installer, he needs some work on his car so while I work on his he's returning the favour, I have a variety of options so some advice would help.
I have at my disposal.....

Clarion head unit and changer,
Kenwood minidisc,
Kenwood amp (small)
Sony amp (huge!)
Celestion boxed 12" sub
Eminence boxed 10" sub.

I want a punchy clear sound as I really enjoy my music. My speakers are Rockford Fosgate, rear 6x9 and front standard size, all Punch series.

I was not going to use the subs at all but thinking of using the small Kenwood amp just to run the rears but my mate says I would be better off amping the fronts and letting the head unit drive the rears as the rears can tend to drown the front in that design of cabin?
Any comments?

Also I am tempted just to fit the mini-disc as CD changers always seem to be untidy in Chimaeras plus with the minidisc the disc storage saved too as you can compress four albums onto one mini-disc, therefore store about 20 albums in a mass the size of a fag packet!
Any comments?

Anyone tried anything different like 6" subs in the storage behind the seats?

Any input gratefully received.

How about fitting a sports exhaust and then the stereo will no longer be an issue as you probably won't be able to hear it!

I think what you have sugested sounds about right, I fitted a few big systems in my previous cars but never bothered in the TVR.
Depending how small the small amp is I'd hide it somewhere, under a seat, or somewhere like that and amp up the fronts, I'd leave the 6x9's off the headunit or as you've said they may get a bit over powering and all the sound will seem to be coming from behind you when idealy you want it to seem like it's in front of you (you don't stand with you back to the band at a concert do you?)
The 12" Celestion is a fine speaker but if it's anything like the 2 8"'s I had they like a lot of power and quite big boxes and fitting sub boxes in Chimaeras and still getting the roof in is possible but tricky and would require aditional porting into the cabin, presuming the 6x9's are in the standard air vents
I'd say leave the subs out unless you really like it loud and low
I've been running a Sony MD player for 4 years instead of a CD changer as I was told unless you buy the top models you get a lot of skipping but I imagine things have come on in 4 years and newer ones maybe a bit better, but I like the 'compalation' discs I can knock up on MD and erase and re-record as much as I like, all down to personnel choice really

Just where is the best place to cut for 6x9s, I read in the 'bible' to leave some of the vent intact to allow airflow and to stop the cabin balooning but it doesn't go into much detail?
Thanks.

If it was me, I'd put the 6x9's as far apart as possible in the rear bulkhead with fabricated MDF spacers to account for the curve in the shelf, then probably see if I have any venting issues, if so fit one of the air vents you've took out back in the centre of the bulkhead

Corin - not sure how much difference there is Hi-fi space wise between your Chim and my Griff. I couldn't have a sub-base in mine as there is simply nowhere for it to go (and still fit the roof in the boot that is). I put bigger speakers in place of the vents, mainly cos I didn't want another two holes in the rear bulk head and have a small amp driving these. What is "balooning" in the cabin and is it legal! whatever it is, I haven't noticed any bad effects.

I use a single shot CD player as i find it a lot easier than stackers - I always end up leaving the same 6 disks in for months as i can't be bothered to change them

Mine is plenty loud enough at high motorway speeds with roof and windows down.

According to Steve Heath the rear vents are to allow air to flow through the cabin to stop the rear screen inflating like Escort cabriolets on helium at speed!

But since when has any TVR been that water tight, never mind air tight
Another way to vent to the rear is to mount the speakers on legs but I'm sure that will have a detrimental effect on the sound quality due to highly complex positive and negative sound wave patterns infront and behind the speaker
If you reallythink you need a vent I'd stick by the single central vent idea

I think that could be the answer, so everyone agrees with amping the front then?

I have everything amped!!!!, rear 6x9's, fronts and sub. Although the sub has just come out in preparation for a new square one which I am going to cut into the rear bulkhead to save on space!!!!. Doesn't really matter about too much sound from the back if you amp it, thats what faders are for!!!!, just fade it to the front slightly and it sounds perfect!!!
Just fitted a tv and dvd and the sound on The Matrix is awesome!!!

Rich - I've gotta ask... what the fcuk do you want a telly and a DVD in a chimaera for

Where do you have your sub fitted at the moment?

And on the venting front, I have the solution to get round that... I never, EVER, drive it with the roof on.. (apart from the rare occasions when I'm out and get caught in the rain - even then it's a close call whether I bother putting it up or not - depends on how many traffic lights I'm likely to get stopped at )

In theory yes
But check the power rating to make sure your not going to kill your door speakers by giving them to much or to little power, it's a long time since I did all this so not sure of exact figures to aim for but I would think it would be fine, it may take a little fiddling with the headunit fader and the amp levels to get it to sound right but it'll be well worth a few minutes messing about for a decent sound quality
Are the door speakers simple 2 ways or do they have seperate tweeters which you can position higher up on the dash?

Something like these?

www.sounddomain.com/sku/ROCFRC4205
As long as your amp pushes out somewhere near 40w rms you should be fine, although it's going to sound pants next to Rich's set up which will probably sound better than most people living rooms
Rich are you coming to Nottingham VI or GT/Tuscans at Rockingham this weekend or Mania?

Answer to question 1 - because I can!!!!, just wanted to see if I could do it!!!!!, + I can now add on my PS2, Sat Nav, video etc!!!!

question 2 - the sub was a 12" in a box so it sat on my rear shelf pretty much perfect. However this leaves bugger all room for anything else and makes putting the roof down slightly awkward!!!. Hence the reason for cutting a new one into the rear bulkhead as this takes up no room!!!!
cheers
Rich

Oh dear. The Max Power chaps have discovered TVR's!

Is nothing sacred?

I can wait to see a Griff with a Escort Cosworth rear spoiler.

Isn't it a slight stretch to label anyone who likes ICE a Maxxer? Nothing at all wrong with liking music, and to hear reasonable bass over the TVR's own requires decent kit.

My setup uses two Pioneer amps in the boot, one for front, one for back. My head unit has 4x45w, but a couple of 200w amps gets the job done mnore effectively! As posted elsewhere, my KEH8400RW has a front enhance mode which takes care of the front/rear balance issue by biasing bass towards the rears.
