Just had a really bizarre phone conversation along the lines of...

"Hello, where would you like the school books with your Company Name on to be sent to?"

<me> "What books?"

"The ones you ordered last October"

<me> "What books?"

"The books with your company name in them, which school shall I send them to? Or shall I just send the paperwork to your address?"

<me> "Who did you speak to?"

"You"

<me> "No, who did you speak to?"

"You, I called this number"

<me> "What was the name of the person you spoke to?"

"It was me that called, I wouldn't be calling you otherwise, I spoke to you"

<me> "Don't think you did!"

"I'll just send the paperwork to your address, that will refresh you memory"

<me> "But who did you speak to? I don't recollect ever having that conversation with you"

It just feels like a scam - call was to my mobile and they did have a little information on the company (I used to have).. She was quite insistent, but didn't know who she'd talked to.. Very odd.. Private Number...(hers was)

Anyone else had this? i.e. are they printing books and then getting companies to pay for them??

Just found this, it is a scam!

http://www.firetop.co.uk/2007/05/31/school-books-s...

It was Home Counties, I think... I just couldn't believe it!! I mean I would sponsor stuff - with a school I was affiliated with, i.e. a past pupil or where my son goes, but I just know I wouldn't sponsor something like this.

She was talking about "stranger danger" books, etc...

I didn't want to say it but someone got in first. There is a whole cottage industry of scams such as this based in the North West. Be on your guard.

used to get them ringing me up when I advertised in a couple of national magazines. They just pick peoples details up from ads or directories, sometimes the line will be we're doing a special feature for a local newspaper and can feature you in it for £XXX, we'll use the ad you've already got, circulation is XXXX, we'll send you a printed copy of it etc etc. Of course they will get the printed copies but only send them to the people who have been conned into advertising in them. Been going for years apparantly accorsing to someone I once met someone; who knew of somebody who ran one of this type things a while ago. Based in the North West for what it is worth (back in the 1990's), he made an absolute fortune out of it. It isn't illegal, they are just selling crap and trying to convince people otherwise and take their cash.
