Just a quick question,

I was contemplating getting a Land Rover 90 2.5TD as a next car. Is the engine durable? and are there any other problems with the 90?

Many thanks,

Matt.

They often leak water through the gutters you can see on the outside where the roof meets the body.
Other stuff.... Get underneath and give the chassis a good going over with say the handle of a screwdriver.
Diffs leak from the drain hole often so don't worry if it looks a bit oily round it.
While you are underneath check the driveshaft universal joints by rattling the driveshafts up and down and backwards and forwards. Any tinny noise is not good - and you can hear this when you drive too, although a small amount of drivetrain 'clunk' is fairly normal when setting off from a standstill. Any when slowing down or changing gear is not a good sign.

Rad leakage is expensive ish to repair. It cost about £150 to get my rad recored a couple of years ago.

It should pull well, contrary to all the 'get a tdi' stories this engine isn't THAT fragile so it shouldn't feel completely gutless if you drive it. And lets face it, less than £1k will see you right with a replacement 200tdi engine should your 2.5TD fail.

So I'd buy on condition of the chassis and the vehicle itself and worry about the engine failure issue if/when it comes to it.
