I have been thinking about an idea/invention for a few months now, just wondering about how to take it to the next stage. Suggestions would be much appreciated.

Nice vague post there....

Have you done any market research and looked into the idea's viability?

The idea is the easy bit!

Keep the idea confidential for the time being if there is any chance that you may want to file a patent application to protect it - if this is the case it is probably worth speaking with a Patent Attorney sooner rather than later. You could also try speaking to someone like BusinessLink who may be able to advise about seeking capital etc....
Good Luck

patent is pretty good, if it has a name get the name registered as a website and dont go on dragon's den without protecting it as u will lose out...

I have had similar experince of late.

Registered the web address, saw an IP lawyer and got the trade mark. Have kept it pretty quiet but we have gone through two demos when we had to show it to people in a raw state and it works and are now working up the 'production version'. Fine line between telling people enough to get them interested to help with the work and telling them and others too much too early and the world finding and someone (perhaps one of the customers involved in the market resaerch) stealing your thunder= confidentiality and non diosclousre agreements.

My focus has been on getting it developed so we can hit the market with a working product capable of being offered on a wider scale if demand is there whilist the competitors are 12-18 months behind in the hope that we can corner the market or retire before the copiers take it as it isn't something I can patent. I have kept the technical detail to myself it can be copied but without a particular algorithim I have developed any copies will never get certification.

I also have an idea

where do i go to get it made and get somesort of scietific expert to tell me if its viable or what?

its a fairly simple concept and i dont think it would be hard to get the product made...
