Went for a run today and part of my chassis broke next to the n/s back suspension. Can this be repaired in situe. It looks as though it can easily be got at from underneath. Hope so.

Chuffin ell Mick, I thought you just said it had cracked, looks a bit more than that to me, anyway as always, if there is anything I can help you out with (apart from money) you know where I am, I certainly think that is a job for Mr Chassis himself, Richard Thorpe, I have seen his chassis work, and it's spot on, no idea on cost though, anyway GOOD LUCK.

that part of the chassis is a known weak point on the later cerbies, I don't know what TVR thought they were doing - seemingly no thought was givent to the bending loads on the antiroll bar support arms.

blimey that looks nasty.

From the photo's it doesn't look like all clean metal around the break, rusty edges etc, suggesting it was previously cracked and has just been finished off by the last pot hole.

I've never seen one break off like that .. usually you'd pick it up on a service before it ever got that bad and weld it up and possibly add some strengthening gussets in there aswell if you thought it was a good idea. Yours has broken the lateral arm and the horizontal gusset so that's a lot of heat in that area if you want to weld it back together properly. You could maybe get away with it by putting some heat shielding around the area as you're welding it, but a better way would be to cut the rear of the rear bulkhead/rear seats away to get a good access for the welding torch. As Harry says, it looks like it's been going for a while, and my experience is that you get lots of warning cracking around the joint before it lets go completely .. like I say I've never seen one break away completely as you always get a good warning on a yearly inspection so it should have been welded/strengthened before ever getting to that stage.

When I had it serviced, they commented on the chassis being in good condition. They said I had a very good car!!

As for the pub bit.....i'm skipping the pub and going straight to the railway lines.

I'm hoping its just that part of the chassis as mentioned above with it being a weak area. I've never been worried (until now) about the condition of the chassis because everyone thats worked on the car has said what a good example i'd got. I hope thats still the case.

It's not rust, it's a fatigue failure from a poor design. Most later cerbs will have this problem at some point, best to catch it early before it falls off completely oo er.
