as most would i assumed the worst when i saw this but the car isnt running hot, it isnt difficult to start, it isnt using water, or oil and theres none on the oil dipstick, could this be caused by anything other than head gasket problems?.

To be totally sure, do a drain and clean, then fill her back up. If it happens almost instantly then you have an issue, if not then i would just monitor it and see if it gets any worst. Is it smoking on start up at all?

a little on start up but no more than ive seen other cars with the same engine do, going to drain the coolant and oil and change them at the weekend and see if it improves.

Pointless if you dont clean out all the breathers as well .If the headgasket had gone it would be blowing water out like a whale surfacing.

True, but for peace of mind it's got to be worth a go? For the sake of £20 on oil and anti-freeze before the "Summer" arrives (I do not accept any responsibilty if we do not have a summer!)you may as well do it. Definatly agree with the breather cleaning, whilst your at it you may as well check that they are all in good condition!
