Hi,
I'm thinking about getting back into Alfa ownership, and I've seen a rather nice 166 for sale locally. I had a nose around today and noticed that the sat nav was in German (in fact the whole radio/computer was). Can anyone suggest a way of changing the language setting?
I've had a look on the web for a user manual but so far nothing doing, so any help from the PH collective is greatly appreciated

I shall try and find a menu for general language change (my wife has the 166 today) as that isn't something I have needed to do. You do need that panel though, it controls the aircon & radio.
Does it have the CD player? The CD changer is only available through AR at the cost of something like 400 quid. Annoying to have the connectors in the boot (I gather most cars have the CD player wiring loom) but can't justify such a percentage of the car's value to play a CD. We feed an IPod in via cassette adapter on long trips.
Other than that it is a wonderful cruiser of a car. Not as sharp handling as the 164, but more comfy and still more than capable. I wish I had held out for a 3.0 though, same economy as the 2.5 but with more power and more gadgets as standard.
If the car is post 2001, check the tax band if you want cheap motoring!

I've got the 2.5L and I don't really want the 3L it burns slightly more fuel and the 166 is too wafty to be driven fast.

Firstly to the OP, I just had a look on the trip computer.
Press the "Trip" button under the display. One of the items at the bottom of the menu is "Settings" (or whatever the German of that is). Select that and I think it was the top item in mine that was "Language". Swap that from "D" to "GB" and all will be well.
Sorry I can't give better instructions right now, but as I said the wife is currently using the car and I only had a few seconds to look.
Although the steering isn't quite as crisp as the other Alfas I have owned I couldn't call mine wafty. As bought the car wasn't quite right and had some rear end bump-steer but a visit to Ken Bells in Fleet sorted that out. Frankly I can take the local pot-holed roads with much greater speed and confidence in the 166 than I can even my Stratos replica
On another note, do you find turning the aircon off makes absolutely no difference to the fuel economy whatsoever regardless of weather?

The extra fuel burn is pretty insignificant from all accounts I have seen, and certainly I wouldn't mind it.Although the steering isn't quite as crisp as the other Alfas I have owned I couldn't call mine wafty. I live in scotland so I have no need of air con! probably if I turned if on dust would come out!
My MAF is begining to go west (If your car is over 5 years old and you have the origonal air meter then there is a big dolip of power waiting for you when you get a new maf) but my mpg was about 29mpg While most 3L report about 25-26. Small change but its for a 30BHP I don't think I need.

I spend too much time in bad traffic and short backroads, so my MPG is generally about 23. Can get 30 on a long run, but the car seldom does that.
As for the performance, I would partly like the better 0-60 time but most 2.5l cars seem to be budget models. Oddly mine doesn't even have traction control (which I thought was standard). After my 164 I was looking forward to having a remote boot release, but again my 2.5 doesn't have that
Still, the sound of the V6 means all sorts of things can be forgiven

Why on gods earth do you need a 3L to sit in traffic 
You should get your self over to Alfaowner.com there is a sticky thread at the top of the 166 section the shows you all the spec options of the different models at different times.
Do you have sports throttle response (fitted as standard on manuals) if not that is probably why we are saying different things about the power.
The boot was designed to be very secure which is why its such a pain to open.

I do have the sports throttle response button (mine is a 5 speed manual), the other two on my console are blanks. Again, the button does change the throttle but on my everyday driving doesn't seem to change the fuel economy so I leave it on if only for amusement value of the red LED
The thing about the boot is the fact that even using the key in the back I gather you are still actually activating a solenoid release (unless you turn really hard with a flat battery) and it already has the remote central locking so remote boot release must be *really* cheap for them to add in. With 2 armfuls of stuff flipping the badge back is irritating.
Still, this week I have been mainly driving a Tigra automatic, so that kind of puts a perspective on the tiny niggles I find on my 166
