s6 avant v 4.2l A6 avant - Am I mad?
Discussion
Following the recent arrival of my baby daughter, I need to buy a family estate car. This will replace an aged Golf Gti for domestic duties, and supplement our Golf cabrio and TT 225 roadster.
It will not do much in the way of miles but would benefit from being a quattro owing to where we live (I know their limitations and benefits from a few winters with the TT...)
I'm thinking of a S6 Avant or 4.2 A6 avant with circa 80 - 100k of approx 2000 age. Fancy something with a bit of poke and comfort for trips to beach and holidays etc, but don't want to break the bank on running / repair costs as this will delay replacing the TT with a 996!
Am I better off buying a boring A6 avant.... It is the old battle of heart v head!
Thoughts welcomed

I know how you feel, i have just recently replaced my E36 M3 with an S4 Avant due to the imminent arrival of our first child.
I looked at S6's as a really interesting idea but pricing these things seems to be a total black art, 100K milers of 2000/1 vintage fetching 12-13k. Just seems like too much money for a car that will require a fair amount to put it back to top condition.
I think it's proabaly the 4.2 V8 and a quattro system that are the most important things to own with these motors.
(EFA)
Just checked classifieds, 4.2 V8 with quattro is available on a standard A6, ticks all the boxes, could be the way to go.

Thumbs up from me in all areas apart from (inevitably) economy.
I have an S6 Avant and am delighted with it. Prices are all over the place and I had to wait for the right car at the right price as they are rather rare.
In terms of space and kit they are superb. The ride is fairly harsh but the handling is good and it doesnt feel as huge as it actually is. I consider the engine and auto box to be superb and although on paper not as quick as you might expect, Ive never felt short of power.
Ive averaged 19.2 mpg but dont do a lot of steady motorway stuff and do like revving the magnificently smooth V8.
Recommended if you can find one!

I had a s4 (2000) And found it small for the wife and kids , changed for a rs6 avant , much more space all round .The 6 is better for family but not your wallet !! The 2.7 twin turbo can make more power than the rs6 with the right mods but it cost's a lot less .
There are not many s6's about and they do hold there price well , what about a allroad ??

Well sadly the head beat the heart on this one... Just picked up an 01 3.0 v6 A6 Avant. Wafts along at quite a pace, should make a good family estate without breaking the bank, leaving reserves for 996 later this summer...
Gave up on the S6 after seeing some very used examples
S4 was just too small...
Thanks for all your advice
